1. Childproofing - where do I start?

Hi moms!My twins are just starting to army crawl around
and I am a bit overwhelmed on how to start baby
proofing the house. What do I need, and what products
do you recommend? And specific questions:1. Should I
gate off the entire kitchen or just buy those little
things so babies can't open cupboards? Our
kitchen/living area is pretty open, but I could but a
gate on either side of the island to block off the
kitchen. 2. What other hidden dangers and I not
thinking of? 3. What do you do when you need to go to
another room or go to the bathroom? Do you just make
sure the entire space is safe or do you put babies in a
pack-n-play / crib while you are gone? Thanks in
advance wise mamas!

i gated off the kitchen, kitchen, stairs, and their
bedroom. with this gate for the kitchen and their
bedroom - i love it.
http://www.summerinfant.com/multiusedecorativeextratallwalkthrugate(bronze)and
this at the bottom of the stairs -
http://www.summerinfant.com/customfitwalkthrugatei had
two big pack 'n plays in the living room - which took
up most of the living room! - for keeping them safe
when i had to run to the bathroom, etc. -
http://www.gracobaby.com/products/pages/pack-n-play-totbloc-playard-bugs-quilt.aspx
- these are big, so they can really play in them. we
got a lot of use out of these. don't forget to bolt
bookcases/dressers/etc. to the walls. really important.
http://lifeasmom.com/2011/09/an-easy-way-to-secure-furniture-for-safety.htmland,
i took everything out of their room and made it a safe
room. except for cribs and some stuff toys. i put their
dresser in our bedroom. no lamps, nothing. just cribs
and outlet plugs. gave me huge peace of mind. to have
safe room for them to play while i began toddler
proofing the rest of the house. the kitchen gate
bought me time too. and the pack 'n plays were
wonderful to give the kids a space of their own to play
without being crawled on top of!hope this helps! best,
jen

Congrats on your pregnancy!I know it's a bit of a drive
but Buy Buy Baby in Walnut Creek has most brands of
double strollers to try out. It's worth it and looking
at everything else there for registering for your
babies.I have the Bugaboo Donkey (stupid name) and love
it. We lived in Chicago when the babies were born and
now in Berkeley and have very few issues with being a
side by side. I take Muni/Bart on a weekly basis with
them in the stroller and it's fine. Yes every so often
I will come across a door that's a tight squeeze or
aisles I can't go down, but it's not that big a deal. I
love that I can flip the seats on the stroller facing
forward or backward, and it slides down to a single
with a shopping basket when I take only one with me.
When they were smaller I would wear one and use it in
single mode to go to certain markets/stores. As another
said I never thought I would have more than one
stroller, LOL. We have 5! Have McLaren Twin Techno (for
travel and kept in the car), Chariot Double jog/bike,
and two McLaren Volos for travel now with two adults
and then use a roller board and one single when I
travel alone and check the other stroller. All except
Bugaboo that was a gift from both grandparents were
bought used off Craigslist and the SFPM consignment
sale. You have to keep in mind what your lifestyle is
and how you will use your stroller. I wanted something
that would be easy to walk with, take shopping etc as I
walked everyday and lived in an urban environment. I
didn't have to drag it up stairs as could leave in
garage before taking boys up stairs. Many of my friends
only ever needed a double-snap-n-go as they drove
everyday and then moved into a double umbrella.Good
luck on the rest of your pregnancy!Jen, Hayden & Jack

Nataliia, funny you should mention it, there was a
thread on here or on craigslist somewhere that gave
tips on maximizing your chances of finding this
particular stroller on craigslist (search early, setup
keywords, etc.). It's hot commodity, but Amazon has
great deals on the base model, and recent changes were
only cosmetic, so you could save on an older version.
The good news is if you ever need to sell the City
Select, it retains its value well, and will go in a
heartbeat.I love the fact that this stroller is so
modular, it turns on a dime, its front wheels lock for
great maneuverability on flat trails and paved trails,
and that it folds to almost nothing (though detaching
the seats can be a pain when you're in a hurry). You
should definitely test-drive the strollers in a
side-by-side (pun intended) comparison. We were
fortunate enough to have grandma offer to pay for
whatever rig we chose, and though I had my heart set on
the Bugaboo or the Orbit Double Helix at first, I found
they were a lot more cumbersome.Lastly, I've found that
in crowded situations like elevators, BART, Union
Square shopping, the farmers market, etc, just because
you CAN fit a double-wide through, doesn't mean that
others appreciate it. It's hard enough taking babies
out in non-baby-friendly parts of SF (i.e. anywhere but
Noe Valley). So I try not to create situations that
increase the ire of those around us. The tandem
arrangement certainly makes us less obtrusive.

Baby jogger CitySelect was our fav during the early
days. Easy to maneuver around the city and comfortable
for them. The only problem I had was when we had to
fold it up, I had trouble pulling up the handles
simultaneously, but that could be because of some hand
pain I have post pregnancy.

I have a double bumbleride indie to sell with rain
cover, wind and sand cover and plane travel bag. Along
with insulated bag and it is in great shape. I love
love loved my bumbleride. I think it is the rolls
Royce of double strollers so durable. It is better
balanced because of 4 wheels versus 3 and each wheel
turns on its own axis.

Thanks!Seems like there are so many phases! Now we're
trying to figure out how to let one sleep while the
other one wakes up crying :( Thanks for sharing the
info from the Ferber book! Did they cry for a long
period before falling asleep?
