Hi Friends, I'm looking for your experience,
recommendations, and insight as I search for family
infant/child care homes for my twin boys. They will be
6 months when I return to work at the end of August. So
far it seems like this is the most affordable choice.
True? I live in SOMA and work in Marin, so any place
along the way is fine as long as my boys will safe and
well cared for. Thanks in advance for your help!

Our girls' fabulous French-immersion preschool still
has openings for both the summer and fall. (& you/your
children do NOT already need to speak French!) They're
located in South San Francisco, about 2 minutes off of
280. (Honestly, from our house in Bernal, it's quicker
to get there than across town!) It's called A La
Vanille, and you can get more info on their website:

the program, is amazing. She's a terrific, calm, kind,
patient educator (& parent)... she's multi-lingual
herself, and her high-school aged kids often help out
at school and with events. (& she has a soft-spot for
twins!) All the other teachers/helpers are native
French speakers. The families attending are from ALL
over the world (& all over Bay Area - but there are a
LOT of San Franciscans.)The school provides a healthy,
home-cooked French meal (vegetarian) for lunch every
day, along with 2 healthy snacks... so that's one less
thing to worry about! Our girls are just wrapping up
their 2 years there, and we will really miss the
school! The girls speak a fair amount of French, sing
French songs all the time, have learned all sorts of
things, regularly bring home all sorts of nice artwork,
and have made some great friends there. We've been
really happy with the school, and recommend that anyone
interested check them out. They usually offer a
half-day trial run, to make sure everyone's a good fit
(not sure if they do this for summer school, tho, as
there are 7 one-week sessions, and parents can enroll
kids in as many as are available, from between 2 & 5

Great suggestions from Jen. I have 14-month old twin
boys, also very active and am home full time with them.
We go to different parks probably 3 days a week, then
meet up with moms in other parts of the city, often
just in a grassy area with a sidewalk for pushtoys, etc
(away from any streets). We do swim lessons once a
week, but you'll need another adult for that (we do
ours on Fridays, otherwise we could meet up!). We've
tried several music classes and they're into them if
it's in a confined space (many in our neighborhood are
in building common rooms with kitchenettes - didn't
work at all). We're trying another one next week, so
we'll see. In addition to the Academy and Discovery
Museum, you could try the Randall, or libraries have
tot hours several times a week that are at least worth
a try (story, music, etc) - they're free so at least
you can leave if it's not working. We just went to
hobitot in Berkeley, (there was a groupon or living
social for it recently). It was awesome! Pretty small,
all indoors and all one big room basically (sort of
divided up, but fairly manageable to keep your eye on
both twins even if they're in different areas - it's
that small). Other than that, I think I'm going to
check out SF gymnastics. We tried mygym when we were on
vacation and it was raining and mine loved it (even at
8 months). There's one in Dog Patch but unfortunately
for us (with swim lessons Fri), but good for you, I
think their tot group is Friday mornings so you could
try that. I haven't been to Urban recess in the
mission, but you could check them too. Not sure if
you're a ggmg member, but you get 3 months free there
if you are.

The Randall Museum is good too (free, but donations are
always appreciated) - they have a tot room, and their
outdoor area is pretty contained.... the animals room
is great, but I know that experience varies according
to tot-moods/energy levels on any given day. Just
behind/down the hill from them is a teeny playground
that's pretty nice...The Arboretum was one of OUR
faves... you can stroller/walk around, there are no
dogs/bicycles allowed, and there's even a scent garden
that kids CAN touch the plants in! There are a
million great little nooks and crannies to explore
(like the little outdoor classroom/gathering area in
the Redwood Grove) as well as lovely open areas they
can safely run around in and you can keep an eye on
them... bring a picnic blanket, tho, as there are
frequently lots of Canada Geese there... the main lawn
is the worst for this, but the others are better for
some reason.There are many ENCLOSED playgrounds (or,
tot-areas of larger playspaces) that are pretty good,
if only people will remember to shut gates after
strolling in - the one in Laurel Hts, on Clay (sorry!
Name escapes me at the moment! Presidio Hts, maybe) is
lovely, altho parking can be a bother. I used the list
from GGMG's website and worked my way through a great
many new parks and playgrounds that way... am still
hoping our Club can complete a multiples-centric
version of that, noting which are the best for our
unique needs. Start here:

that list just now, here are some of the ones I recall
liking, at about that age, I think:* 24th/York
mini-park - particularly good when the water feature is
working... not sure of status in draught.* Skate park
near Potrero/Chavez/101 - Potrero del Sol (NOT on the
GGMG listing, but it's great! There's a nice
playground area that's totally away from skate park
area, but connected by a winding path. Lots of grassy
hills to roll down.)* Balboa Park - really open,
usually non-crowded, usually easy parking* Cayuga Park*
Douglass Park, Upper Noe Rec Center, Walter Haas Park
(Noe Valleyish)* Yerba Buena Center playground, near
the Children's Creativity Museum (+ the Carousel there
is great...)* South Beach Playground, near the
Ballpark, is a nice small, contained one (no swings,
tho!)* Potrero Hill Playground/Rec Center* Franklin
Square (Potrero Hill)* Glen Park/Glen Canyon -
playground JUST restored, and you can go for hikes down
through the valley and really run around near the camp
area* Midtown Terrace and JP Murphy playgrounds (we've
had POM Family Outings at both) are great* SF Zoo's new
playground - this makes the cost o' membership worth it
alone, practically!!* Tanforan Shopping Center has
decent free play area, as well as a reasonably-priced
paid indoor play area with TONS of cool stuff in it -
that one i THINK you can even leave your kiddos at
while you shop, for short periods. We've only been
there for parties, but the kids LOVED it (& they wear
wristbands with your name/cell number on them while
there.)* Ikea!! They have free play areas, which can
be a life-saver, while you shop for 45 minutes... I
can't remember what entrance criteria are, tho - might
be a little ahead of you...While I love the Children's
Playground at GGP, I don't recommend that with twins
that dart off in different directions -- it's too big
and too heavily populated to easily keep an eye on
them... altho the carousel just outside it is
fantastic (& we've often gotten free extra rides on
slow days...) Same w/ Dolores Park - it's FABULOUS,
but big, and a lot of things can block your sight.Phew!
THAT was a trip down memory lane!HAVE FUN EXPLORING!!
(& don't feel weird about dressing them alike if you
are -- makes it SOOO much easier to find them in those
situations....)

We have two strollers - the Bob - which is light and
easy to get around town. But I just bought an umbrella
type stroller for running errands - Combi Twin Cosmo
Stroller. I have a Jetta and it fits into my trunk
easily. I'd prefer to use the Bob ALL THE TIME, but
it's a hassle to take the wheels off to get in and out
of my car. I am not currently selling mine. We bought
ours on Amazon.
