HiI'm hiring a new nanny for my twins. I am a single
mom. They will be about 12 weeks old when she starts.
I'm paying her $24/hour. She wanted a lot of hours. If
she works more than 40 or stays overnight, what do you
recommend for the overtime rate? Or an overnight rate?

3. Advice on whether or not to hire a birth doula?

Hi there, I'm due in July with fraternal twins and am
trying to figure out if it makes sense to spend the
money for a birth doula, knowing that at least at UCSF,
they won't be able to come into the OR with me during
delivery. Did others find that having a birth doula
regardless of this fact that valuable? If so, what
would you say is worth focusing on in interviews given
the difference in singleton and twin deliveries? Any
advice is welcome. Thanks!Liana

twins are complicated enough that a doula may not be
sufficient, in my opinion. maria iorillo, midwife, was
my labor management consultant. she agreed to take me
on as a client. i carried di/di twins to 39 weeks, then
had a vaginal delivery without epidural - as a direct
result of her expert knowledge and care. i cannot
recommend her enough. frankly, maria changed my life
and set our new family off down a path for which i'll
be forever grateful. happy to answer any questions you

Thanks for your response. My boys are 4 months actual
age (about 2 months 1 week adjusted). My husband and I
are concerned about being "reactionary" to
problems/slow development rather than being able to be
pro-active to help them with activities before they
build bad habits.We do tummy time with them, and basic
physical exercises, like helping them stand. Do you
have any special toys you recommend for other things,
like rolling, reaching/grabbing, etc.? And what sorts
of things do you read? Have you heard anything
regarding infant massage and sign language as a means
of brain development?Thank you!

The fact that you are doing regular tummy time is
great! We have a skip hop activity gym with lot of
sensory objects for them to touch and grab - we got
them started with this early. We started reading kids
books early, too, but they didn't start to show
interest until more recently. Since babies crave touch
massage is a great thing. We haven't been very regular
about this though except to promote healthy digestion.
I wouldn't be surprised if studies have shown that ASL
helps with brain development, but we've started using
in the hopes that it will eventually help them
communicate their needs much earlier than the have the
ability to use verbal language to do so. Anything you
teach them between 0-3 months is apparently "just for
fun", whereas by 4 months they're ready to start
picking up on the repetition of what you are signing.
We have the book Baby Signing 123 and so far it's been
good!
