<p class="c10"><span class="c3">Student Led Conferences just closed and I wanted to share with you how exciting it was to hear our SFUSD Middle School students reflect about what they have learned, experienced and what has been most joyful during their time at middle school this fall. I hope you enjoyed listening to your child’s reflections as well!</span></p>

<p class="c10"><span class="c3">All our middle schools are focused on supporting deeper learning experiences to help your child develop their sense of self and sense of purpose. This year, your child will continue to develop their literacy skills as critical and analytical thinkers and doers across all content areas, including Math. We know that strong Math understanding is critical for our children. </span></p>

<p class="c10"><span class="c3">Starting this Fall, all SFUSD K-8 students took an assessment called the STAR Math and Reading. This assessment is a dipstick that shows where your child’s understanding is at that specific point in time–it will grow and shift when they take it later in the year as they will be learning new content. We as a district have committed to focus on Mathematics in the middle schools. Our initial efforts to support this focus, we have ensured that all students have access to a new supplement curriculum called Dreambox.</span></p>

<p class="c10 c11"><span class="c5">As a supplement to our Math curriculum, Dreambox supports students in developing mastery of Math concepts and skills, aligned with state standards and assessments. Dreambox provides personalized instruction----adjusting instruction within and between lessons to match the student's readiness. </span></p>

<p class="c10 c11"><span>Dreambox is designed to motivate students to continuously engage in learning Math by making the experience fun and interactive. It helps build confidence in Math through goal setting, problem solving, and the opportunity to “level up” as students make progress on those goals. </span></p>

<p class="c10 c11"><span class="c5">All of our middle school Math teachers have been receiving training in using Dreambox throughout the school year to provide them with actionable data to help them adapt instruction to students’ individual needs. Teachers can assign students personalized lessons based on concepts and skills they have observed need practice. Students can also navigate Dreambox to practice Math at their own pace and to review skills from across grade levels.. </span></p>

<p class="c10"><span class="c12">Dreambox is accessible to students via their SFUSD Clever login. From your child’s Dreambox screen, you can locate a parent login code if you would like to track their practice using this tool. </span><span class="c3">After about five hours of Dreambox practice, the program learns where your child is doing well and where they need additional practice to master Math skills and concepts. Students who complete five lessons, or about one hour, of Dreambox practice each week make observable gains in their Math skills.</span></p>

I hope this tool helps create a stronger partnership between your child’s school and your home by offering a standards-based, fun, safe way for your child to grow their skills in Math and for you to observe their progress and connect with their teacher in our shared goal to support our young people in developing their success. </span></p>
