Dear SFUSD Students and Families,

We are so excited to welcome your students back to school on Monday, August 19, 2024! As the new school year approaches, I feel joyful and optimistic, and I am eager to visit classrooms and meet your students.

SFUSD is busy preparing for your return from summer break. To help your family get ready for the first day of school, please review the important information in our printable Back-to-School Guide or its mobile-friendly version.

For the past year, SFUSD has been focused on aligning the district’s limited resources with our goals for student outcomes. This work is part of our overall effort to balance the district’s budget, which must happen in the next year. Over the summer, we have been working on creating a new portfolio of schools for the 2025-26 school year, which will include school closures, mergers, or co-locations. We will share a public update on the portfolio planning process at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, August 27. Please note that no school closures, mergers, or co-locations will be announced at this meeting. The public announcement of the new portfolio, including closures, mergers, and co-locations, will take place in September 2024. Our team is also finalizing plans to inform affected school communities and provide support during and after this transition. If you would like to learn more right now, our Resource Alignment Initiative website is regularly updated with the latest information.

We know these changes are very personal. I want you to know that we are committed to handling this process with the utmost care.

While this process is undeniably challenging, our goal is to create a district where every school is fully enrolled and resourced, providing every student with a strong and supportive learning environment. It won’t be easy, but our students deserve it.

Thank you for your continued support and trust in our district. I look forward to partnering with you to ensure a wonderful 2024-25 school year.
