<p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Hello!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">I hope you all had a great start to the new school year! It was great meeting all of my students this past week, and hope that the are feeling good about the start of the new year with all of their classes.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">After advisory all day on Monday, we started off the new year with our block schedule on Tuesday and Wednesday. During class, students were introduced to myself, to the different parts of our classroom and their do nows (these are to be completed at the beginning of the class everyday, and are available on our daily google slides if they miss it). After Mrs. Estrella talked for awhile, we did our first activity which was a card sorting challenge! Students had to sort a deck of playing cards in three different rounds: in silence, in silence after planning, and then being allowed to talk to each other. At the end they had to write a response to a question for a ticket to leave (TTL). A ticket to leave is a way for me to do a quick check in to see what students' thoughts are regarding topics and/or activities we do in class. Many students responded that communication and teamwork was important, and that sometimes working in silence is a good thing. Feel free to ask your student about the activity to learn more about it.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Thursday, we reviewed the syllabus (class expectations of class) and then reviewed advice from former 7th graders about how they can be successful in my science class (or any of their 7th grade classes). The syllabus agreement form is due on Friday, 8/30/2024!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">For our activity, Advice from former 7th graders, the students reviewed several students' works and had to choose one advice that they felt our class should consider to be the most important. Across all classes, students said that they should not procrastinate, make sure to turn in their work on time, stay positive, do their Do Nows, make sure to keep up with their notebook, and also not to make Mrs. Estrella upset (haha). Students were assigned their first real group work assignment on google classroom where they had to learn how to make copy of a document and share it with their group. From there, they had to submit it into google classroom. Students were then assigned individual work (also know as homework) to practice copying a document and then submitting it in google classroom. They were informed it would be due on Sunday, 8/25/2024 by 11:59PM. Please check in with your student that they have read and followed all the directions for the assignment. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Friday (today), we had a shortened period so students had to practice on how to work on their own after being presented our class slides. They had to write a letter to their future self, and were told that I would return it to them at the end of this school year. They had a couple of things on their to do list to complete such as a Letter to Mrs. Estrella (to tell me about their experience with science) which is due on Monday, 8/26/2024 in class, and then complete their Thursday assignment if they did not already complete it. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">And that is it for the first week! Students were informed that they need to bring a SPIRAL notebook (with at least 70 pages) on Monday, 8/26/2024, as we will begin working on our science notebook. For students who are unable to get a notebook by Monday, please make sure to fill out this </span><a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdRWWKfnN24G6QvXKEKmiPwdeRDg79XamjXIPRm712W8DOgLg/viewform?usp=pp_url"><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">form</span></a><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;"> so that I am able to make sure we have enough for all students who need it. If you are able to donate any extra spiral notebooks, we would greatly appreciate it. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">I hope you have a great weekend.
