Hello! And that is the end of week three for this school year! I hope you were able to enjoy the three day weekend with friends and/or family.

Another busy week for science! On block day, we quickly reviewed what we discussed during Friday's class, and I conducted a lab demo for the students using chemical X and specimens that I found lying around my neighborhood. As exciting as the lab was, I wanted the students to pay attention to what safety rules I was/was not doing as I conducted the lab. This is the first year that students pointed out that I was not using gloves! I loved it because previous classes did not really point that out. I did explain to them that I will definitely let them know when certain things during the lab do not require the use of gloves, but I do appreciate how they observed such a small detail. After students discussed at their table and shared their observations with the class, students were assigned a safety rule and asked to create a mini-poster that displays the rule, and draw the correct and incorrect way to conduct the rule. They were able to begin it at the end of our block and then told to complete it on Thursday.

For Thursday's class, students were introduced to the vocabulary sheet. This will serve as a place for our key words from the unit that students should have easy access to in their notebook. They were told to tape it on to the back of their notebook (they should check the example in class if they did not tape it in yet). We did an example word together in class, and I emphasized the importance of keeping up with the words as they appear in their glossary slide (found at the end of the class slides). Students have been warned that I do random vocabulary checks so they should do their best to keep up with it. After our introduction to the vocabulary, students had the opportunity to complete their safety posters as well as any other assignments in their notebook. I did a notebook cover and the unit 1 title page check, so if you see it marked as missing "Mi" in parent/studentVue - students just need to show it to me during lunch and/or after school to get their grade updated for those assignments.

Today, students had their very first quiz which was about our lab safety rules. Most students completed it within ten minutes, while we had a few that needed a few extra minutes to complete their quiz. From there we did a brief introduction to the metric system with a funny skit from Saturday Night Live about Washington's dream of a country that does not follow the metric system as the rest of the world. They then were introduced to the history of the metric system and how the United States is one of three countries that does not follow suit of the rest of the world.

Well, that's it! If your student was absent today for the quiz, they are able to come in during lunch or after school to make it up. There is no late/absent ticket required for that - they just need to come in to complete it. In addition, you will start to see updated grades in Student/ParentVue. Students have been informed that there are a few reasons for missing work: forgot to put their name on it, was absent and/or did not turn it in. If that is the case, a simple check in with me will help figure out how to improve their current grade.

I think that is all for now! If there are any questions, please feel free to reach out and I will try to reply back as soon as I am able to.

Take care,

Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
