<p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Hello!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">I hope you had a good week and are ready for the weekend! Apologies for not being able to send the weekly email last week, but things at home got a bit busier than I expected and couldn't find time to write it out, so here's the rundown from science these past two weeks (watch out! this is a little longer than usual):</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">As mentioned in a previous email, I was out on Monday (9/16) for a doctor's appointment. When there is a day that I am out, I post the slides for the day and also a video that I talk through for students who prefer to hear my expectations of the day. Students were expected to pick up a lab worksheet, cut and tape it into their notebook, then read through it and complete a 5 question google form in their Google Classroom. As you all received on that day, I sent out an email of my disappointment of students not completing a simple task in class (my absent students that day had an excuse). I had one class that told the substitute they were all done with their work, so they had an impromptu notebook check. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On block day, we completed our very first lab, except for 4 - 5 students per class who did not have their safety contracts turned in (these students were still allowed to watch the lab, but could not handle any of the equipment). During this lab, the students were able to practice the use of the graduated cylinder, glass beakers and the pipette when it comes to liquid measurement. They learned how to fill in a data table, and to also draw their observations into their science notebook. On Thursday (9/19), students were given reflection questions for the lab to complete and had to complete a metric system review on Kahoot Part 2, along with vocabulary to complete in their notebook. On Friday (9/20), we had our second quiz on metric conversions and basic lab safety rules. After their quiz, we passed back papers for the first time and students had to cut/tape things into their science notebooks. If they did not finish, they were asked to complete it at home. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On to Science from this week (9/23 - 9/27):</span><br><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">This week, we had a lot of learning when it came to observations and sketching! We learned about the five characteristics of a good scientific sketch on Monday. The students took notes into their science notebook, and then we took the time on block day to examine a leaf and do a scientific sketch on white paper. This was then supposed to be taped down on Pg. 26 of their science notebook. Many students did a great job with their sketches, and most were able to finish it during class time. I was out on Tuesday for 1st and 3rd period classes, but those students still should have completed their scientific sketch of a leaf.</span><br><br><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Thursday, we set up an overnight lab using a gummy bear! Students got the chance to use some of our scientific equipment such as the thermometer, triple beam balance, graduated cylinder and a petri dish. Each group had to record data about their bear, draw a scientific sketch of it (following the five characteristics we discussed on Monday and block day), and write a hypothesis of what they thought would happen to it overnight. Today, these groups were able to get their gummy bear back, and had to complete a scientific sketch and record data into their science notebooks. They had a few minutes in class to answer their reflection questions on Pg. 28 of their science notebook, so hopefully those are all complete! I will be checking Page 28 on Monday.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">A couple of things to know is their science notebooks are going to be submitted during the second week of October. This is about two weeks from now and I would like my students to make sure they are all caught up with their science notebook. This notebook check is 50 points, and can really affect their grades if it does not meet the expectations. The rubric is found on Pg. 3 of their science notebook, so they should review the rubric for the notebook check. They have been explicitly told every single day this week.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">I am updating grades in student/parentvue as soon as I am able to. Students have been told to check their grades and if there are mistakes to come speak with me during lunch and/or after school to make corrections or to check for no names. Students should be using LATE tickets at this point if they have not submitted assignments. They should check in with me regarding that work. As for students who already submitted late/missing work, thank you for your patience and I take the time to review them</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">I hope this information is helpful and that you have a wonderful weekend.
