<p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Hello! </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Sorry for no Friday email, but my wifi was not working on Friday night, and then the weekend got the best of me, especially with this heat wave! I hope you all found ways to cool down and get some rest.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Last week, students were introduced to quantitative and qualitative data, as well as three types of graphs that we will be seeing in 7th grade science. I had students work on their own in taking their notes to get them more independent when it comes to notebook work time. When students completed their notes for qualitative and quantitative data, they had to see me for a stamp and pick up a worksheet to complete. They then had homework that evening which was to take notes on the three types of graphs: line, bar and pie graphs.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Tuesday/Wednesday, we reviewed the four graphs the students had to analyze for their Types of Graphs notes. It was a bit disappointing to see the look on students' faces when they realized they did not follow instructions properly for their homework. We reviewed the four graphs together as a class, and students shared what they noticed and questions they had abut the graphs. Once we completed that, the students were introduced to causal and spurious correlation. Together they received one graph that they had to analyze, determine if it was a causal or spurious correlation, then create a clickbait title for their graph! They also had about ten minutes (depending on the class) to update parts of their notebook if needed. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Thursday, we took notes on CER Statements. CER stands for Claim - Evidence - Reasoning, which students will use throughout 7th grade science when they answer an essential question (EQ) for the unit we are working on. For this first unit, there is no EQ, but they will have one for the next unit. The rest of the class period was dedicated to a grade check for the 1st quarter. I explained to the students that I was surprised that there were so many students who have not come up to update their grades if there were mistakes or to even show me claimed No Name papers or to turn in their work! So, students should have come home with a list of missing assignments (if they had any), and asked you to sign them. For some, it was an eye opening moment of how quickly time is going as well as a realization of how they need to stay organized and to manage their time better. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Friday, students had their third quiz. There were questions about their gummy bear lab, calculating volume and scientific sketching expectations. Most students did well, but really need to work on writing complete sentences (this is something I emphasize often) as well as adding specific detail to their responses. Once students completed their quiz, we did a CER Activity called "Who is Mrs.Estrella?". I put out a few items on the my desk, and students had to write a claim about who they thought I was, support it with the evidence they saw at the table or around the classroom, then really explain how the evidence they listed supports their claim. Feel free to ask your student what they wrote! If they were absent, then they could check in with their table group to learn what they wrote about me. These students are pretty kind in their claims!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Anyway that is it! I've been telling students about the due date of their first notebook check and last day for missing/late work for the last two weeks! Their science notebook is next Friday, October 11, 2024, and the last day for any missing/late/absent work is on Thursday, October 10, 2024 (they will require a late ticket to turn it in and these can be found online and in the classroom). As a reminder, they are allowed SIX late tickets for the semester. Students will also be doing a practical this week where their group will demonstrate how to use a triple beam balance, graduated cylinder, ruler and a thermometer. They will also complete a Unit 1 Reflection that will officially close out our first unit, and bring us into Unit 2: Chemistry. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">For students who have been turning in late work, please remain patient as I grade and update information on Student/ParentVue. There will also be a fluctuation in some grades as Quiz #2 and Quiz #3 will be updated this week, too. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Please let me know if there are any questions/concerns!
