<p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Hello! </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Welcome to another letter from Mrs. Estrella. For those of you who participate, I hope you all enjoyed Halloween last night! I'm sure there was a lot of joy in dressing up, as well as seeing all the little kids dressed up in their costumes!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Well, this week has been learning about how to use information from the periodic table to not only draw atomic structures, but as a way to understand how chemical compounds are formed because of valence electrons. This concept is not the easiest for students, despite really focusing on the super basics of chemistry. So let's get into what they did this week:</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Monday, they had to do a digital atomic structure of two elements using information from the periodic table. In addition, students had to read an article about how chemical compounds form in Newsela where they had to complete "Checks for Understanding" and a writing prompt about the article. On block day, students learned how to write chemical names of chemical compounds by using the periodic table and a prefix table that was provided to them. Please know that these are VERY BASIC, and we do not really go into the full detail of how to name other (more complicated) compounds. It is just for them to get a feel for how to use the periodic table and how to learn how to read some chemical compounds. On Thursday, they had Quiz #5 that asked to demonstrate understanding of how to read a periodic table and draw an atomic structure. After the quiz, we passed back papers and organized their notebooks. I emphasized to them that if I am providing time to work on their notebook during class time, they really should take the time to work on it. And that leads us to today, where students had to read another Newsela article about the Conservation of Matter. They had to take notes in their notebook and complete a worksheet that was due at the end of the class period. If your student took it home, they do need a late ticket to submit their work. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">In other news, students have brought to my attention that google classroom assignments they did not do and/or submitted late are giving them zeros for assignments, and it is being transferred to StudentVue. I want to assure you that those grades will be overridden by me once I review their assignments - which there are a few who have turned in late or did not submit it and were reminded to fill out a late ticket. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Next week, students will learn how to balance chemical equations AND begin their first group project. More details to follow in the next couple of weeks, but this project will take us to the end of the unit and into winter break!
