Hello! I hope you are all doing well this past week, and are ready for an update of what is happening the last few weeks of the school year. Yup! There are less than six weeks of the semester left!

This week was a busy week for everyone. On Monday, students were introduced to balancing chemical equations! On block day, we spent class time taking notes and doing a couple of examples to help them learn how to balance these equations. This is also not an easy task to do. I appreciate those students who came in during lunch to get extra support on this topic - sometimes it really does require getting some one on one help, or having a space to work with friends to gain a better understanding of it. For this topic, students were provided three activities to work on: a pHet simulation that needs to be on Pg. 54 of their notebook, a worksheet for practice that is taped as a flip page on Pg. 54 (we reviewed the answers in class on Thursday), and then today they received a review worksheet for naming compounds and balancing chemical equations. The review worksheet will be turned in on block day when we return from the three day weekend. I am more than happy to provide additional practice, so students can email me or they are welcome to come in during lunch/after school to get more support.

On Thursday, we learned about endothermic and exothermic reactions. They wrote the definitions, as well as watched a video demonstration - which the scientist did not do a good job following their safety rules! Students noticed and were commenting, too, that thermometers were not meant to be stirring chemicals together. They were also introduced to their group and individual project for Unit 2! Working with their group, students will be building either a hot or a cold pack using specific chemicals from class and for their individual project, each student will create an advertisement for their pack. They have the choice of making a video, creating a jingle or song, or even keeping it simple and making a poster.. More details to come in the following weeks. These will be complete by mid-December, and we'll wrap up the school year with a reflection, and a peer evaluation.

Today, students completed their team folders (it has their group name and logo), and previewed the labs they will do when they return from the weekend. These labs next week will help groups determine whether or not the chemical compounds they use create an endothermic or exothermic reaction. Moving forward, groups will then select which reaction would be best to help them design and build a hot or cold pack that can be used to ail certain injuries. We also had our Unit 2 Vocabulary Check, which was a bit disappointing. Each class had two words to be checked from our list, and they received full credit. Students are aware that they must come in during lunch/after school to try to make up this vocab check if they did not have it ready for today.

Speaking of grades - they should be fully updated with our most recent work by the end of the weekend. There will not be many other small assignments between now and the end of their project and they are encouraged to make sure their notebook is complete and up to date, to do any additional work if needed (Aka extra credit), and to do their Do Nows!! Too many are not completing them and are losing out on their free points. Science notebooks for Unit 2 will be due soon (probably in about two weeks) and there is no new material that will be added to their notebook.

And here we are, a three day weekend. Thank you to our veterans for the sacrifice they have made for all of us. I hope you are able to enjoy the time with your family this weekend.

Please let me know if there are any questions/concerns, and I will try to get back to you as soon as I am able to.

Take Care,

Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
