Hello!

Happy Friday! It has been a very busy week in science as we have officially begun our group project for our chemistry unit. The students worked with their group to conduct six different labs to find out which combinations create an endothermic or exothermic reaction. Based on that information, the students had to revisit the definition of endothermic and exothermic and how it applies to the hot pack, reflect on the different lab stations that had the most/least temperature, which cost the most/least, and which station had the safest/not as safest reaction. From there, groups then determine which chemical compounds they wanted to use for their chosen pack. Groups that were approved to move on to the next part of the project are required to watch a video where the teachers dissect a cold pack. In this video, students learn what are the main components and the mechanism of what should be in either their cold or hot pack. Their entire group is responsible for completing the worksheet together, and will be assessed once they feel they have completed it to the expectations. Only a few groups are here, and I am anticipating many to be there on Monday. Students have been advised and highly encouraged to come in during lunch and/or after school to complete their work WITH THEIR GROUP if they fall behind or want to work ahead. If there are instances that arise, I do make exceptions, but groups should be coming in with the majority of their teammates here.

In addition, students were told to work on their science notebook since they will be due on Friday, December 6, 2024 (almost three weeks from now). The last time we did any lessons in the notebook was last Thursday which gives them the opportunity to catch up with their assignments.

Next week will be Student Led Conference Week (11/18-11/22), so students will have a shorter class period on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Just a reminder that school will end at 2:15PM, and teachers will be holding conferences with families.

With that, I hope you have a good weekend. Please let me know if there are any questions/concerns that you might have, and I will try to reply back as soon as i am able to.

Take care,
Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
