Hello Students and Families,

I hope you all had a restful break and enjoyed spending time with your loved ones. I want to remind my students that they will need to bring their science notebook back on Monday, 1/6/2025. I did have a few students who left them in the classroom, mostly 1st period, so if you did not leave it - PLEASE BRING IT ON MONDAY!

I also want to remind you that I will be out for my daughter's surgery starting on Wednesday, 1/9/2025 to Thursday, 1/16/2025 (possibly 1/17/2025). I will be creating lessons (with a video!) for the days that I am out for students via google slides and it will be posted daily in google classroom. They are to complete the work DURING CLASS TIME and if they are unable to finish during class, they should complete it at home. I hope that you will be able to help in your student's success by checking in with them about what they completed in science class. Please do not take "I do not know" for an answer. Have them show you our google classroom slides. I know it will be extra work for you, but I would appreciate any way to help our students become responsible and accountable for their work.

I will be assigning digital work on google classroom and expect students to complete them (please refer to the "Individual Work" slide for an overview of homework from their daily slides). If they are having difficulty completing an assignment, they are to email me during their class period so that if I am online, I might be able to respond (but please have patience if I am unable to).

Our next unit is on Substance Abuse among Adolescents. We focus on the three common substances that students might be exposed to in middle school/high school (nicotine, alcohol and cannabis) and how it affects the developing brain and body. We collect questions students have regarding the substance, educate them on how it affects an adolescent, and how choices they make should be to help them maintain a healthy lifestyle. We discuss peer influence (aka peer pressure), social and media influences, and what the stages of addiction are and how it affects not only the person, but friends and family. So be prepared for your student to come home with questions/things they learn from the lessons. I plan on sending an email on Monday or Tuesday with a rundown of the specific topics we will cover during my absence.

I know that some of us might feel anxious about my absence (or well, at least I am), but I know we can be successful if we help each other out. So, please remind your student (as I will remind them on Monday) that they will need to be more responsible and honest with the way they conduct themselves while I am helping my daughter heal. I will be in contact with the substitute (she has subbed for my class for the last three years and knows the routines of our class) to check in regarding any particular questions that she might have in order to help your student, as well as any behavior issues that might arise.

Feel free to reach out with any questions/comments/concerns you might have, and I will reply as soon as I am able to. Happy New Year!

Take care,

Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
