<p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Hello!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Happy Friday! Thank you for sending positive vibes for my daughter's surgery. It went well, and she is recovering at home. She is feeling the pain from the surgery, and is learning how to move around our place with her crutches. She was told that she cannot bear any weight for 4 weeks, so for her it is a huge adjustment from being so active to now just laying in bed.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Despite my absence, your students had a busy week here in science, and it feels like a long time since I last emailed! The students had a lot to accomplish in the last four days!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Monday, I reviewed with the students the expectations of behavior and work for when I am out. Slides for each lesson are posted daily with myself speaking through the slides to add a little bit more information to what students should be learning. It also explains what to write down, as well as what needs to be completed prior to the next day. Students were also introduced to a digital notebook that they will use for this unit while using their physical notebook. As much as my former 7th grade students said they do not like this, this is something they will be doing in their 8th grade science class. I think it's good to share it with them so that they can practice a little bit and be a little more prepared for what will happen in 8th grade. So, if they are having trouble, just remind them that the physical notebook is for NOTES only and the digital notebook is for activities and reflection questions. At the end of this unit, I will ask students if they would like to continue it for the rest of the school year (most of them usually say no haha). When they are preparing their digital notebook, and they say they forgot how to do it, there is a video at the end of our slides that explains how to copy/paste from the teacher's digital notebook and put it into their own digital notebook.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">I was present for Tuesday's class, but on Wednesday, I was out and left my first video lesson (it was the same lesson for Tuesday). Students were introduced to our new Unit on Substance Use. We had students fill out an anonymous survey, and took that data and presented it to them. Questions we had asked were if they knew people who did certain substances (nicotine, alcohol and cannabis), and if they have ever been asked to try them. Students were very shocked to learn that the percent of students who were asked and tried was extremely low. During this lesson, most students are typically under the impression that it should be higher. We talked about how our experiences and exposure to things through social media, family and friends, and entertainment can impact how we view the world.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Thursday, students learned the difference between Over The Counter (OTC) and prescribed medication, as well as which substances are considered legal or illegal. They had to complete three slides for their digital notebook: two were a sorting activity (which I asked students to post screenshots of their work into google classroom), and the third was reflection questions.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Today, students were supposed to learn the difference between stimulants and depressants. They also had their first of two lessons on the first substance which is Alcohol. The videos are related to the impacts of how alcohol impacts the different parts of the brain, and causes people to behave in certain ways, especially in adolescent brains. Students had to complete Slide 10 from the digital notebook. Students also had to complete another digital assignment which was to take a screenshot of slide 1 of their digital notebook which is due tonight by 11:59 PM.Next week we will discuss what it means to be drunk and how alcohol poisoning impacts students. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">I hope you have a restful weekend. Students are to complete any incomplete assignments during the weekend, so please check in with them.
