<p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Hello! Another week down, and about a lot more to go. Time for another update on the shenanigans of 7th grade science! </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">During my absence, students had to complete their lesson for alcohol, nicotine and cannabis. For alcohol, students learned about what happens to a person when they are drunk (how alcohol is digested in the system and when you know someone is drunk), as well as alcohol poisoning.It was emphasized that the distinction between the two is difficult to see, but paying attention to the small details can help determine which is which. The students ended the lesson with a Kahoot review. They have videos and reflections to review for this particular lesson in their digital notebook.. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">For the lesson on Nicotine, students should have learned that there are more tobacco products than just cigarettes and vape pens/e-cigarettes. They learned how the brain is impacted by the nicotine present in tobacco products, and the differences between cigarettes and vape pens. Students were told to watch the video Juulers Against Juul which was created by teens who noticed that a lot of their peers were becoming addicted to Juul products. In the video, it was of teens who explained when they began and what they noticed would help less teens want to use the Juul. In my video that I posted for the classes, I told them about the docu-series on Netflix called the Big Vape - it is about the company Juul, and I found it quite interesting. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On 1/16/25, students had a lesson on Cannabis (marijuana) and students worked in groups to research specific topics related to it. Their group had to create a poster with their table mates and presented it in a gallery walk style to the class the following day. They watched a video and read an article on the origin of Cannabis, and how it got the name marijuana. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Friday, 1/17, students had their first quiz for the semester. It was a mere check to see if students were completing their notebooks and if they had learned anything from the lessons so far. After their quiz, students had to complete a gallery walk for Cannabis posters by taking notes on their binder paper. They then had the rest of the class period, if they completed everything, to work on any assignments that needed to be completed. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">With my return this week (which is really nice to be back in the classroom), students had a lesson on Opioids on block day and how a fentanyl test strip works on Thursday. We discussed that opioids are the most highly addictive substances, but that they are used to treat people experiencing extreme pain from surgery, injury or chronic pain.This drug can only be given with a doctor's prescription or in hospitals. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Today, we went over the five stages of addiction. It was emphasized that addiction does not happen immediately, but over a period of time (except in the case of opioids). We then shared with them different symptoms to look our for when someone might be addicted to alcohol, cannabis, nicotine and opioids and provided resources they can pursue if they wanted to help that person quit. We also had a brief discussion about the choices we make and the types of consequences that can happen, and that it does not necessarily mean just for drugs and alcohol, but just overall choices they make as they navigate life. Anything we decide always has a consequence. Students were asked to create a poster that displays the 5 stages of addiction, as well as consequences that can occur. They were allowed the use of digital or physical posters, and working with a partner. This assignment is due on Sunday, January 26, 2025 before 11:59 PM</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">And that is that! Next week we continue our lessons on peer influences and will wrap up Unit 3 with a mini-project of what they have learned. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Thank you for reading, and as always - feel free to reach out with any comments/questions or concerns you may have, and I will reply as soon as I am able to.
