Hello! Happy Friday! I hope you had a great week & are ready for the weekend! Just sharing our updates as we finish our third unit for the school year.

On Monday, we wrapped up our unit with Peer Influences. We talked about the different types of influences as well as peer pressure. It was really emphasized that if a person does not feel comfortable, does not think it is safe or in their best interest that they do not need to do something that peers are asking them to do. They reviewed different ways to say No, and also how our influences help shape the person that they grow up to be.

On Tuesday, the students worked on a mini-project on a substance that they learned the most about and wanted to bring awareness to their peers. They had the choice to work on their own or with a partner. I have yet to go through all of the work, but when I was checking in with many of them…I was impressed by students who decided to make a video and short stories. They had a rubric to use as a basis of how their mini-project will be evaluated. The students were told that this mini-project would be due on Friday, and if they wanted to work on it at home, they were more than welcome to.

On Thursday (remember, we had Lunar new year off!), we had our guest speaker come in to share his experience as a surgeon, and how some of the organ transplants that he does are from donors who have died of a drug overdose. Students were both amazed and shocked to see some of the images, but they did find it extremely interesting to hear him speak about the drugs used in the hospital. After his brief presentation, students had the rest of the class period to work on their mini-project and were encouraged to work on some of it at home. Ask your student about the presentation!

Today, students had a quiz on following directions and how to write complete sentences. Many students seemed to have done well and scores on Student/ParentVue will be updated soon. This weekend, they should work on setting up their Unit 4 Title Page and to ensure they completed prior to Monday. So if they come home feeling a little stressed about science….that was me.

After the quiz, students had the opportunity to do final work in their digital AND physical notebooks before turning them in today. For the physical notebook, students had to just tape their notes into their notebook in order of sequence (Information is in our daily class slides). When it comes to the digital notebook, students have until 11:59 PM TONIGHT (1/31/25) to complete it before it is considered missing and late. Some students did not complete their slides or update their slides, despite the many reminders in class, as well as opportunities to come in during lunch and/or after school. For this next unit, I plan to continue to encourage students to stay on task, make those choices to come in for extra support and to just get their work complete.

Next week we will begin our next unit on Geoscience Processes! This school year seems to be moving by so quickly, and I really hope your student is learning something that will stick with them as they grow older.

Have a beautiful weekend. Please let me know if there are any questions/concerns/comments, and I'll try to reply as soon as I am able to.

Take care,

Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
