Hello! Hope you had a wonderful week despite the rain and are ready for the weekend. Meanwhile, here is what we did this week in science!

On Monday, we introduced Unit 4: Geoscience Processes. We are focusing on earthquakes and showed our students footage from the 1989 Bay Area Earthquake, the eruption of the volcano in Hawaii from a couple of weeks ago, and an earthquake that occurred in Japan on 1/1/2024. Students filled out a google form to generate questions that they may have and will cover during this unit. The number of students who submitted their work on time was a bit disappointing, so the number of questions wasn't as great as past years. At this point, I reiterated to students the importance of going home to review our class slides to make sure that they have completed all the things they need for science. On block day, the students worked independently to review (or learn about) the rock cycle and the three types of rocks, and on Thursday students examine a rock to try and identify if it was metamorphic, igneous or sedimentary. The key we used is not as extensive as it could be, so students probably did not get the exact rock, but were able to at least see if it was one of those three rock types. This past week we had a great amount of information covered!

All work from Unit 3 is graded and updated, except for their Unit 3 mini-project. I know some students (and families) are not happy with their current grade, but there is still time for students to raise it up. It will require a lot of motivation and focus to complete the work, and really dedicating time at home to complete work that they could not finish during class. So far, I've seen many students who did not do well with Unit 3 really make a strong effort for at the beginning of this unit, and I am very appreciative of their work and really hope they can continue that momentum. This part of the school year gets tough, but they can totally do it! As a reminder I am available during lunch and after school Mondays - Wednesdays. In addition to leaving right after school on Fridays, I now take my daughter to physical therapy on Thursday afternoons unless there is a change in our schedule.

Students will have opportunities for extra credit in the next couple of weeks. I would definitely encourage them to complete them, especially students who did not do well this past unit.

With that, I hope you have a great weekend. Please let me know if you have any questions/concerns and I will reply as soon as I am able to.

Take care,

Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
