<p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Hello! It's been a VERY busy week despite it being a 4-day school week! We had a lot going on in science this week and last week! Be ready for a lengthy email with some important information at the end!</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Last week, students had to watch a couple of videos, read an article and complete a digital puzzle about Alfred Wegener and Harry Hess and their theory of Plate Tectonics. On block day, we took this idea of plate tectonics and demonstrated the four different types of plate boundaries that exist using Oreo cookies (divergent, convergent (continent to continent), convergent - subduction, and transform plate boundaries). We discussed how these create different types of landforms, and/or changes how the earth looks. On Thursday, we introduced the idea of convection which helps to solidify the movement of the plates underneath the lithosphere. We had three examples: boiling water, a lava lamp, and then a demo in front of class. The results are posted in the student slides in Google Classroom. Then Friday, we had a quiz and then used the rest of the class time to tie all the information from the week into creating maps for the Pacific Northwest and Bay Area Fault Maps. Most students were able to complete one map, however, those who did not - they were told to complete it at home during this three day weekend. Most did not, so that means they spent more time on block day working on it. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">This week, students were 20 - 25 minutes on block day to work on their Bay Area Fault Map & Pacific Northwest map Reflection Questions, and then the other half of block was intended for students to read 4 articles about the Earth's Surface & Earthquakes and create a poster that explained how the articles are related to each other and why they selected the pictures they chose to include. This poster was due on Friday.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Unfortunately, that plan did not go as I expected as I was disappointed that students did NOT complete the maps at home as I had asked them, and instead spent the majority or all of the block period completing that assignment (the two maps and reflection questions). Those that did as assigned were able to work on their articles and their poster, and were ready to turn them in on Friday at the beginning of class. So, I had to readjust our schedule to accommodate the students' work habits. We went over the importance of going home and making sure to review work they need to complete before coming back to class each day.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">On Thursday, I was absent due to a rescheduled doctor's appointment for my daughter. So, the students were given time to complete their posters, then after they completed a lesson on seismic waves and soil type by taking notes in their notebook. Today I proposed the question of "What is liquefaction?" as their Do Now question. Those that completed the notes at home had a better understanding of the question, as opposed to students who were seeing it for the first time (which were several students in each class). We discussed the importance of understanding soil maps, soil types when it comes to earthquakes, as well as discussing liquefaction prior to even building a structure or even purchasing a home. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">For this weekend, students have been assigned to complete the questions for the Seismic Waves and Soil Type lesson (see Google Classroom) and Types of Maps Notes. Please check in with them that they have completed it, and if they have any questions/concerns to please email me. </span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Next week, we'll cover the topic of topographic maps and also do a brief introduction to their group project! This year is going so fast, and I can't believe we are finally here.</span></p><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Some reminders for all 7th grade: </span></p><ol><li><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">7th grade field trip is on Friday, 3/20/25 - Permission slips will be going out to students next week!</span></li><li><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Notebooks and late/missing/absent work is due on Friday, 3/7/25</span></li><li><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Student Led Conferences are the week of March 3 - 7, 2025.</span></li></ol><p><span style="background-color:transparent;color:#000000;">Please let me know if you have any questions/concerns and I'll reply as soon as I am able to.
