Hello!

We are close to the end of the school year with roughly about 5 weeks left! Isn't that crazy? Well, here are the updates for this week:

Students returned this week to a lesson on empathy, and researching two ecosystems: rainforests and coral reefs. I had to readjust our lessons for the week because of field day on Wednesday. With empathy, I wanted our students to understand its importance for all of us, and to also get a perspective from an adult who has "lived life" and can share their own experience and knowledge. There are still students who need to submit that worksheet, so please have them fill out a late ticket and submit next week.

Students then spent the rest of the week researching two ecosystems that will be their focus for the rest of the semester: Coral Reefs and the Rainforests. I am so proud of these 7th graders for their focus and ambition to learn more about these two ecosystems. They all took the opportunity to read articles and watch videos related to those ecosystems to learn more about what it is and what are some of the issues that are occurring to them. I spoke to them about learning to learn, not learning to just complete a task. And I appreciate those students who really took that advice and exceeded expectations of information they learned for these two ecosystems. We spent two days for Coral Reefs and two days for the Rainforest, and they are to complete their graphic organizer at home to get it signed on Monday.

We changed groups today, so if your student was absent, they will find out who their new group is on Monday. We will also officially start our Human Impact project by reviewing the overview of expectations, and having groups select their ecosystem of choice. There are six parts to this project, and I am hoping that they will take the advice of communicating with their group as well as coming in during lunch and/or after school to get some parts completed. Most of it should be done in class, so long as their group is focused on what they need to do. There is a short turn around and I have spoken to all the classes about the need to stay focused, and continue to push until the end of the year. They will feel so much relief and pride when they are able to finish this final unit. I am really looking forward to seeing what our students are able to do with our last few weeks together.

A heads up that science notebooks will be due on Friday, May 9, 2025.I have been actively signing off on most of Unit 5 assignments, so if you do not see a signature or a completed assignment, please encourage them to complete it. There are so many opportunities to raise their grade if they are feeling disappointed about it, and one of them is to get that notebook up to date.

And with that I hope you have a great weekend! Please let me know if you have any questions, comments and/or concerns and I will reply back as soon as I am able to.

Take care,

Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
