Hello! Happy Friday! I hope you all have been having a great week! It has been quite busy here in science as we are in the middle of our final project (I know!!) for the school year.

Last week, we finished up our final research on Rainforests and Coral Reefs, and then students got to determine which ecosystem they wanted to focus on for the project. For part 1 and Part 2, students determined which specific issue they wanted to focus on for their ecosystem. Once they were approved, they moved on to choosing one specific Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) that they think relates best to the issue they identified was happening in their chosen ecosystem. For Part 3, students had to write an essential question that they will use to help drive their project. It is meant to give it purpose and be a way to develop a solution to the issue that they are focusing on. This part either went really quick for most groups or took a little bit longer. The questions that groups had written were well thought and helped them re-focus their solution. This was the check point for their project before moving into the weekend.

This past week, for Part 4, students had to really start thinking about their solution and some of the details they need to have in order to carry out their plan. There are some great ideas groups are thinking of doing such as fundraisers through bake sales after school (watch out! They might come talk to you about it if they haven't already!), creating informative posters to not only hang at school, but also within our school's community; and presenting to their peers during advisory. Feel free to check in with your student to see what their group is thinking of doing! Many groups entered into Part 5 of the project which is to design and build/create their prototype of the solution that they have chosen. They had to learn what a prototype is and how to refine it by asking stakeholders for feedback on their prototype. There are groups that reached this point this week which is really exciting as it gives them a week to refine and their work. Students will eventually present their work which I will also review with them next week. You are more than welcome to come in and see what our students are talking about and doing!

Other news - students turned in their science notebooks today for their final notebook check! I also reminded students (and now you) that the grade that will be on the final report card is the on that is marked "Spring". So many students have the opportunity to raise their grades, so please make sure to talk to them about make up work for Quarter 4. The last day that I am accepting late/missing work will be Thursday, May 22, 2025. Please do not ask for an extension as this is definitely enough time to make up any missing work as the only big assignments due will be this project (Group, Presentation and Peer Evaluation).

I think that's it for now. If you have any questions/concerns/comments, please feel free to email me and I will reply back as soon as possible. Have a beautiful weekend, and Happy Mother's day!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Jennifer Estrella (she/her)
7th Grade Science
Herbert Hoover Middle School
