Dear SFUSD Community:

As we move into the heart of the school year, I want to take a moment to thank you for the incredible partnership and support you continue to show San Francisco’s public schools. Whether you are a family member helping your child with homework, or a staff member guiding students each day, your role is essential to the success of our learning community—and I am truly grateful.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to visit several of our schools, and I’ve been so impressed by what I’ve seen. Schools are full of energy, curiosity, and thoughtful engagement. On the first day, it was a joy and inspiration to visit Sanchez Elementary School, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, and Thurgood Marshall Academic High School – I want to extend a special thank you to school staff for hosting me and other visitors as we welcomed students and families. At Sanchez Elementary, I saw the energy of a vibrant community school where students thrive in a Spanish Biliteracy Program and innovative math instruction is driving academic success. At MLK Middle School, I was deeply encouraged by the school’s progress in boosting attendance and building a stronger, more inclusive school culture—evidence of the staff’s dedication to equity and student well-being. Finally, at Thurgood Marshall, I had the opportunity to see how a strong community schools approach, with a focus on counseling and student wellness, is setting students up for a successful school year.

I recognize the impact of budget cuts are felt widely across our system, but the reward of showing up for our students each and every day has not diminished. Our educators are creating learning environments where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to do their best. And behind every successful lesson is the hard work and commitment of teachers, support staff, and administrators who care deeply about our students’ growth—not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

Some of the bright spots across our community so far this school year include the grand reopening of Everett Middle School’s new schoolyard. This renovation turned an entire asphalt yard into green space, multiple courts and even environmental features. We also celebrated the ribbon cutting and grand opening of Shirley Chisholm Village, a 135-unit, 100% affordable housing community that is the first of its kind for San Francisco and SFUSD—designed specifically for district educators and district staff. Named after Shirley Chisholm, a trailblazing educator and the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress, this project is a powerful example of what’s possible through strong collaboration between the City and SFUSD.

To our staff: thank you for your dedication, creativity, and tireless efforts in service of students. Please watch this video on our efforts to support our educators, and retain and attract talent.

To our families: thank you for your ongoing involvement, encouragement, and trust.

It’s clear that when we work together, our students thrive.

I look forward to continuing my visits across the district and sharing more of the exciting teaching and learning happening in our schools. In the meantime, please know how much I appreciate each of you for the role you play in making our district a place where students can truly shine.

Warm regards,
