Dear SFUSD Community:

At a time when rhetoric at the national level is creating uncertainty and concern for many, I want to state directly and unequivocally who we are – and what we believe in – as the San Francisco Unified School District.

We are, and always will be, a school district that serves each and every student who comes through our doors. This includes students who receive Special Education services, students who are English language learners, and students from all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. We are proud of our diversity, and we recognize that our strength as an educational institution depends on our ability to support and uplift every child.

We are working in partnership with the California Department of Education to address any updates from the federal government, and continue to closely monitor their guidance regarding Federal Actions and Communications.

No matter the circumstances, our commitment does not waver. Our schools are places where all students are valued, seen, and supported. This includes honoring the rights and needs of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans, and providing the services, accommodations, and inclusive practices that help every learner thrive. In alignment with the recommendations outlined in last year’s FCMAT Special Education Report, our investment in equity, access, and excellence in Special Education services remains steadfast.

To that end, I am delighted to share that our new Head of Special Education Services, Jenny Jimenez-Payne, begins in SFUSD next week. Jenny is a dedicated and equity-driven leader committed to ensuring that every student with disabilities receives high-quality, inclusive educational experiences. With a strong background in special education leadership, she brings deep expertise in compliance, instructional practices, and family partnerships. Jenny’s work is guided by a belief that collaboration among educators, families, and communities is key to student success. As SFUSD’s new Head of Special Education, she is excited to build on the district’s commitment to inclusion, access, and belonging for all learners.

To our families of students with disabilities: thank you for your partnership and your advocacy.

To our staff who work every day to support and empower students with diverse learning needs: thank you for your deep commitment and care.

As we navigate challenging times, we will continue to center our decisions around what’s right for students. That includes ensuring legal compliance, but it also means leading with empathy, respect, and belief in every student’s potential.

I am glad that you are part of our SFUSD community. Together, we will keep building a system that honors the dignity and promise of every child.
