2. Reminder: Education and Protection Planning for Families
--------------------------------------------------------
twinpeakstwins - 4/23/2012 11:13 am

Tomorrow, Tuesday Night, April 24thPresented by Tom
O'Brien(SFPOM member and father of twins)This
complimentary educational event will provide parents
with answers to some of the most frequent questions
they have in regards to saving for their children's
education and protecting their families with life and
disability insurance.— What are my options for
saving for college for my twins?— How does my
savings choice affect their ability to qualify for
financial aid?— How much life insurance do I really
need?— What are the different types of life
insurance and which one is right for me?— What
would happen if I was unable to work due to a sickness
or injury? Am I adequately covered at work? This
material is being presented by Tom O'Brien of SGC
Financial and Insurance Services. Tom is an SFPOM
member and parent of twins, born January 2012, and
lives in Laurel Heights with his wife Hilarey. He is a
Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and has an MBA from
Thunderbird, the Global School of Management. SGC is an
independently-owned and operated fee-based firm that
has been providing financial advice in the Bay Area
 since 1950.Event Details also moving

My girls will soon turn one year and I have decided to
wean myself off the pump. I'm a stay at home mom and am
with them a lot, continuing to nurse on a feeding
schedule but a bit on demand as well. They get bottles
in addition to nursing for almost every meal. Up until
now, those bottles have been pumped breastmilk or
formula but we will soon transition to cow's milk. I
have lots of questions about all of these changes and
hopeful some of you who have been through this can shed
some wisdom upon me.1) for the switch to cow's milk -
did you offer this in bottles at first and then switch
to sippy cup? Right now they are taking some water in
a sippy cup but still learning to manage themselves
(mainly need help with tilt). How much cow's milk did
you offer in the beginning - exact amount they were
getting in bottles and the same number of feeds? Did
you make transition slowly or all at once? 2) for the
pump weaning, I've mainly been pumping at night before
I go to bed and during the day if I'm not with them. I
stopped pumping at night two nights ago and my body is
starting to adjust - they just get a big fill in the
mornings now which I guess will happen for a while.
I'm guessing my body will also adjust to the no pumping
on the days I'm not with them and don't nurse as much?
I'd like to just quit pumping cold turkey but want to
make sure that's an okay thing to do in terms of
keeping up my milk supply when I am with them to nurse.
(meaning, not nursing the same amount each day) -
guessing some of you went through this if you were
working and stopped pumping but still nursing on
weekends or working part-time and nursing some days
during the week? Will I need to make a decision to
only nurse mornings/evenings and not during the daytime
for consistency with my supply or does the body just
adapt as needed each day and there will be milk for
them whenever they need it and I'm around to
nurse? Thanks in advance for any tips/advise. I have
lived with this pump for 11 months (had even mastered
"pumping while driving") so it's a bit strange to not
have it attached at the hip. Will also be strange to
move away from making bottles to just pouring milk from
 a carton.

I also mastered pumping while driving! Congrats for
making it so long. Your body will adapt to whatever
nursing situation you throw at it, but just make
gradual changes. I can't speak from personal experience
as to nursing some days and not others, as when I
finally stopped pumping I only nursed morning and
night, and by that point they were on regular milk
during the day, so I just kept that up on weekends,
too. However, if you haven't checked out kellymom.com,
I highly suggest it. You'll find people on there who
didn't pump at work and still managed to make milk for
 their baby to nurse morning/night/weekends/whenever.
Supposedly your body will get used to it and have milk
available when you need it. I definitely wouldn't
suggest quitting the pump cold turkey -- maybe cut out
one session every other day and see how your body
adapts to still having milk there during the day when
you want it. As far as cups/bottles go, even if they
love the liquid in the cup, they WILL go on a milk
strike when you first make the transition, and so for a
few days while they adjust, you will be throwing out
milk that they don't drink. Knowing that, if I were
doing it over again, I'd definitely wait until there
was no more breastmilk in that drinking vessel, because
pouring out breastmilk bruised my soul. I did it in
reverse -- bad decision. Get your girls on milk, then
make the switch to cups.Every mom I've talked to about
switching bottles from breastmilk (or formula) to cow's
milk did it the way I did (slowly add a bit of cow's
milk the first day, then a bit more after a few days,
making the transition take a week or more), and every
single one of those mothers says it wasn't necessary
and their kids would have taken cow's milk straight
from the beginning. But we all did it anyway. :-) I
think the temperature adjustment (to cold milk) is more
of a shock for them then the milk switch. My friend
whose second kid just turned one started giving full
bottles of cow's milk all at once, and her kid didn't
bat an eyelash. Then a week later she took away the
bottle and the kid drinks only cold milk from a cup.
That said, you'll probably feel more comfortable slowly
adding milk into your breastmilk in the bottles to help
them adjust, but just know it doesn't need to be that
 gradual.

JCC also has very warm pool for swim lessons of all
ages. We go there for family swim hours but not to a
class so can't speak for classes directly but we love
the facility/pool for family swim time!

We go to the JCC for swim lessons and my boys have
learnt alot there. We also go at weekends and the pool
is nice and warm. I think that up to 3 years its
parent participation but after that its just the kids
and the instructors. All the instructors are really
good and have lots of patience! Its normally 4 to a
 class at the most.Good luckTracey

Thanks for the info on the car seats, Wendy. We have
flown several times, my worry is that I am doing it
alone. Kristen, I totally forgot about Carey's post.
That is a great idea. Still would love any advice
people might have about boarding and seating
arrangements with ONE adult, two kids, and anything
(iphone apps, etc....)that will distract them. At this
point, they have flown close to 30 times but each
flight i am still looking for new and entertaining ways
to grab their attention for long periods of
 time.Thanks!Thanks!
