1. Altered sleep schedules in Europe
--------------------------------------------------------
j_pawlikowski - 6/22/2012 3:45 pm
Traveling to Europe for 2 weeks with 6 month old twins.
Any tips regarding sleep schedules or anything else
for that matter. Currently the girls sleep from
9pm-6am, and since we are flying on a red-eye, I
anticipate that they should sleep most of the way....I
hope! But what happens when we arrive in the evening
in Europe when they have already had a entire nights
sleep...aren't they going to be wide awake? Can I
somehow prepare them for this altered sleep schedule?
Any advice or helpful hints wuold be greatly
appreciated.
-Janine

I used the book The Baby Sleep Solution by Suzy
Giordano (the old title was 12 Hours Sleep by 12 Weeks
Old) starting when my twins were 3 months old. Her 4th
& 5th children were twins and the inspiration for the
sleep program she came up with. The main criticism I've
heard is from the parents of singletons that don't like
the rigidity of the schedule. Most parents of multiples
are already on a schedule before sleep training ever
starts, so it's not a stretch for us. It's a quick read
(she's very repetitive) and very easy to implement. The
key is feeding more during the day so that they can
make it through the night. She teaches you how to
stretch the time between feedings while adding to the
amount they eat at each feeding, spread out over
several days. We never had to resort to "cry it out"
which great because we weren't comfortable with going
that route- but the book has advice on using it if you
think it will work with your babies. All in all it took
about two weeks to get my guys on the daytime schedule
and to drop the night feed.I highly recommend the book.
I found it very easy to follow and it really worked.
They turned three in March and with the exception of a
handful of nights when they've been sick they have
consistently slept for 12+ hours every night since
then.http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Sleep-Solution-Proven-Program/dp/0399532919

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins. I read it with a
highlighter pen and flagged multiple sections that I
referenced repeatedly. Our other secret was the "dream
feed" - we'd scoop them up around 10pm and feed them a
bottle (they usually drank it in their sleep and went
right back down) and this helped them get all the way
through the night. Also, we never separated the twins
into different rooms, no matter how loud one cried.
Now they're 2yrs and they're 100% used to each other's
noise/crying. Sometimes in the morning I'll go in and
1 twin is wailing crying and the other is still
snoring! Good luck. Sleep training has it's
challenges and isn't always intuitive. Trust the
process, it will all work out in the end. : )

I second Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins by Marc
Weissbluth, and I also SWEAR by the dream feed.My
sister just had a singleton who is now 11 weeks old and
sleeping 10.5 hours straight at night -- she has used
Moms on Call (website and DVD, don't know if there is a
book). Based on what she has told me about it, it seems
like it would work really well with twins.
