Cinco de Noe Block Party at Upper Noe Rec Center on September 7

Join local organizations and businesses, friends and neighbors for a community block
party marking the fifth anniversary of the renovated Upper Noe Recreation Center,
Saturday, September 7, from noon to 4 p.m., featuring live entertainment, arts and
crafts, musical petting zoo and a doggie costume contest and parade.

Volunteer Program Highlights

San Francisco Sate University Freshmen Welcome Days

On Saturday, August 24, RPD Volunteer Programs hosted a full day of volunteer service
at Lake Merced and Golden Gate Park for incoming students to San Francisco State
 University and the University of San Francisco.  Over 120 SF State freshmen received
a hands-on service learning lesson by participating in native habitat restoration
and trash debris pick up at Lake Merced.  In Golden Gate Park, 40 youth ministry
 freshmen from USF spruced up the Bercut Equitation Center, pulling weeds and removing
debris from along the perimeter of the corral to prepare for the big Party for the
Parks. The workday proved to be an excellent introduction to the unique and extensive
park system within the City of San Francisco.

Friends of Boeddeker Park at Sunday Streets

On August 18, the RPD Volunteer Programs, Friends of Boeddeker Park and Trust for
Public Land involved in community outreach at the Tenderloin neighbor Sunday Streets
event.  Sunday Streets are events that encourage recreation, community activities
and fun in San Francisco. At the Tenderloin Sunday Streets, some visitors stopped
by the Friends of Boeddeker Park Ellis Street info booth to play the larger-than-life
Jenja building-block game.  Others stopped by to inquire on the status of the park,
which is currently undergoing a massive renovation.  It is scheduled for completion
in April 2014, and community members are looking forward to reconnecting with their
neighborhood park.

Teens, Looking for an After School Job?

Workreation is a youth employment and training program that is an integral part 
of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's mentorship program. This year
marks the 54th year of the program. All youth, ages 14-17, who either attend school
or live in San Francisco are eligible (18 as long as they are still in high school).

Participants work for minimum wage ($10.55/hour) in a variety of recreational, aquatic,
administrative, sports, and afterschool positions throughout the Recreation and 
Park Department, that provide opportunities to develop leadership and problem-solving
skills, teamwork and community awareness. Youth work up to 10 hours per week during
school year programming.

Applications for the 2013-2014 school year will be accepted through Friday, August

The interview process will tentatively take place September 16-21.  School-year 
programming begins in early-November and ends mid-April 2014.

The Harvey Milk Photo Center is inviting amateur and professional photographers 
to submit photos representing the many facets and forms of family within the Bay
 Area LGBT community. A variety of family units, such as those consisting of parents
and children, significant others, friends, extended family members, and pets, will

Save the Date: SF Urban Riders Presents the SF MTB Festival on September 7

You are invited to participate in the FIRST Annual San Francisco  Mountain Bike 
Festival, hosted in McLaren Park. A fundraiser for the  McLaren Bike Park, the event
is FREE to attend with a youth BMX area, beginner MTB riding zones, a professional
bike jump demo, and other activities.

The headline event is the McLaren Short Track Challenge, a  competitive event on
 a hybrid Cross Country course. The XC race does  require a waiver and registration
fee to participate.
