* Less "no," more alternatives.

* Use reflective listening and I-Messages

* Use more encouragement, less praise. Praise is a reward,
   encouragement is a gift.

* Positive, respectful ways to dicipline:

   -Distract the child
   -Ignore misbehaviour
   -Structure the environment
-Control the situation, not the child
   -Involve the child
   -Plan time for loving
   -Let go
   -Increase your consistency
   -Notice positive behaviour
-Excuse the child with a time out
o Time outs are for tantrums, biting/hitting, constant
interruptions, and jumping/climbing on inappropriate furniture
o Time outs are one minute per year of age.
o I put the gate up in the play space and set a timer. Time out is over
when the timer goes off. Playing is ok - shows that the child has
regained control (as an aside, we need to find a way to "lock" the door
to the garage when we do this.)

* Set limits and give choices.
