MLK Day of Service on January 21

Third Annual MLK Day of Service "Faith in America's Future"

8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

African American Art & Culture Complex, 762 Fulton Street

Supervisor London Breed, the African American Art & Culture Complex and Mo' Magic,
in partnership with Rec and Park, host a special moment in time, and screen the 
second inauguration of President Barack Obama in the theater for all to enjoy right
before going out to serve the community. Doors to the AAACA will open at 8 a.m. 
for the viewing of President Obama's swearing-in. Volunteer registration begins 
on-site at 9:30 a.m. Volunteering will begin at 10:15 a.m. with lunch for volunteers
provided at 12:30 p.m. Volunteer opportunities include garden projects, clean-up
 in parks and streets, letters to the President, letters to seniors and veterans,
and many more.

Community Budget Meetings for FY 2013-14 on January 28 and 30

Join us for two budget meetings to discuss preliminary plans for Fiscal Year 2013-14,
Monday, January 28, at Sunset Recreation Center, and Wednesday, January 30, at Minnie
& Lovie Ward Recreation Center, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Learn about our department's
budget instructions for the upcoming year and let us know what your priorities are
in your neighborhood parks.

GreenAgers Graduate with Sense of Community Pride

Rec and Park's first class of Greenagers graduated this past Saturday, January 12,
at the Eco-Center at Heron's Head Park (Port of SF).

The Recreation and Park Department's GreenAgers Program, under the umbrella of our
Youth Stewardship Program and co-sponsored by the Port of San Francisco and the 
Parks Alliance, offers teens the chance to play an important role in helping our
 communities and improving our city's green spaces. GreenAgers meet and work with
teens their own age and gain crucial skills in leading workshops, networking, public
speaking, teamwork, environmental education and community engagement.

Friends and family of the graduates were on hand, as well as Rec and Park GM Phil
Ginsburg and representatives from community organizations Literacy for Environmental
Justice; Friends of Crocker Amazon; We4youngblood Coleman; BMagic; Crissy Field 
Center's Inspiring Youth Emerging Leaders (IYEL Program); Bay Area Youth for the
 Environment (BYE Youth); and the Department of the Environment (DOE).

Camp Mather Lottery Now Open; Inclusion Week is June 1-8

Registration for the Camp Mather lottery is now open and ends on Friday, February
08, at 5 p.m.  Take this opportunity to get up to Camp Mather, the City's public
 family camp near Yosemite. Enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, campfire entertainment
and a host of other fun activities for the entire family.

We invite you to register for any week at camp, but we encourage you to consider
 choosing Inclusion Week, June 1 through 8!  During this week, Recreation and Parks
will provide trained staff to help facilitate participation of children with disabilities
in camp activities and provide some great new specialized activities as well.

Black Power-Flower Power Photo Exhibit Begins January 19

These exhibitions presciently recognized the magnitude of what were to be defining
moments in two of the most fascinating stories of 20th century America's cultural
history--the blossoming of baby boomer hippie "flower power" in San Francisco's 
Haight Ashbury district and the intensification of the Black Liberation Movement
 embodied by the Black Panthers.

Tu B'shvat Celebration at Buena Vista Park on January 27

Rec and Park, Chabad of Cole Valley and the Buena Vista Neighborhood Association
 will be celebrating the new year of trees and ecological awareness with a Tu B'shvat
community event at Buena Vista Park on Sunday, January 27, from 10 a.m.-noon, and
a picnic from noon-1 p.m. There's limited volunteer space, so please RSVP to kimberly.kiefer at sfgov.org

Register Now! Winter Skateboarding Classes for Youth

Rec and Park's Shred-N-Butter is happy to offer 2013 winter skateboarding programs
in six locations this year. Participants will learn basic ground skills such as 
starting and stopping and then progress to more advanced skills such as "dropping
in," kick turns and nose and tail stalls.Participants will also learn to utilize
 ramps and other obstacles to create the layout of the skate course, in addition
 to providing the skaters a chance to try out tricks in a new and different setting.
Participants must have their own equipment. Helmets are mandatory for all participants.
Other safety gear recommended.
