2. Looking for nanny share -Weds, Thurs needed starting In July
--------------------------------------------------------
sftwins1 - 5/3/2013 2:11 pm

We are looking for a nanny share situation or a
part-time nanny for our now 2 month old twin boys. We
need coverage on Wednesdays and Thursdays at a minimum
and have some flexibility with other coverage days. We
are looking with someone with twins experience. We live
 in Pacific Heights.

3. kindergarten - keep together or separate twins?
--------------------------------------------------------
seabringwatts - 5/3/2013 10:13 am

My b/g twins are starting kindergarten this fall at
public school (Alvarado Gen Ed). I have heard from
parents at Alvarado (and for public school in general)
that the district automatically splits up twins.1) Is
this true?2) Is there an opportunity to discuss the
options with the school?3) Who do you suggest I
contact...the principal or teachers or both?4) For
parents who have children already in elementary school,
what did you do, why and how did it go?My husband and I
are open to hearing about both paths (keeping our twins
together or separating them). We haven't made a
decision and frankly would like to ensure we can have
the discussion with the school before the school
 arbitrarily makes that decision.Thanks,Virginia

Hi Virginia,I'm not sure what the SF school district
does as far as separating twins,(we're in Pacifica now)
but we did decide to split our boys. It has workedout
so well. One of our boys is very dominant and the
other was more of afollower. The dominant one would
always tell the other one what to do andthe follower
was happy to get direction from his brother. At first
theboys weren't sure about being split but pretty
quickly they found theirplace and made their own
friends. Our boys love each other and love toplay
together but often they are doing their own thing on
the play groundwith their own friends. It's really
been great and we haven't regrettedour decision for a
second.I think it's good for them to find their own
identity in their own classes.Congratulations on both
getting into Alvarado. We have friends there andthey
absolutely love it!Good luck, Florence BrayOn Fri, May

It depends on the preschool, for some you've missed the
boat - they need to be on the list in-utero - but for
others (most of them really) you have plenty of time to
get on their list. They all have different time tables
for when you can first apply.

I'm not sure how long the wait lists are, we went to
Children's Campus at SF State University and the kids
 loved it there! http://childrenscampus.sfsu.edu/Good
luck to you!Susanmom to Sean & Sarah

My friend started Kid Admit (the website that James
listed above) because she felt it was a confusing
process to seek out preschools when she was searching
for one for her son. The goal of that website is to
collect information on multiple schools in one place
and then allow you to apply to them via online. So
definitely check it out. That said, don't worry about
the preschool process if your twins are only 7 months
old. I started asking other parents about the process
when my twins were 10 months old as I like to be
prepared. But really, you can't actually apply for
preschools until the year before your children will
enroll. (I only found 1 school that had that
'waitlist' option from when your children are
babies.)There are MANY preschools in San Francisco and
you will surely find something that works for your
twins when you get to that stage. A friend told me to
find something that is near my home as it will make a
big difference, and it was some of the best advice I
received. My twins go to preschool only 10 minutes
away by car, which is really helpful for the morning
routine and getting us out the door and to
work/preschool.It also is great because the
families/friends that we have made live nearby so that
helps for play dates and getting together outside of
school. There are other posts on preschool so I
 recommend searching the archives, too.

Ditto on the "all depends" comment. We put down several
deposits on some of the snooty ones and when tour time
came around, I couldn't even get a tour, and got pretty
turned off. Even if you get your deposit in, it doesn't
necessarily increase your likelihood of getting in as
they have lots of quotas they need to meet (siblings,
gender / ethnicity mix, connections, and a bunch of
factors unknown). We choose not to play that game, and
boy are we happy we didn't.There are lots of great
schools that approach it differently though. Most of
the Montessori schools and others don't play that game.
Some offer year-round admissions (kids start and move
up grades based in their age and ability, rather than
the age they are in Sept) on a first-come, first-serve
basis. There's a good event in the Fall (I forget who
sponsors it, but its pretty widely publicized) where
you can meet with most of the schools which is really
helpful in helping you target what you want in a
school. So bottom line, you WILL find a great school,
but it does take some work. If you are set on the
fancy ones, it probably would be a good thing to start
writing those deposit checks now. But if you're more
mellow, no need to stress, just keep your eyes peeled
for the events in the fall.

We hadn't given a THOUGHT to preschool when our nanny
left (our little ones were then almost 3) and we
started to panic.... but then learned about this
awesome school that another twins family was graduating
out of, and within a couple of weeks we were able to
visit, our girls were able to "test-drive" it for 2
mornings, and it was a terrific fit! We're still
there, and couldn't be happier. During all that, we
heard about several other opportunities as well.
Bottom line: don't panic, especially THIS early....
there are many many options in SF (& some don't even
want to enroll people super-early.) Parents are GREAT
at letting you know when someplace they trust has
openings. You've got enough to think about right now,
without worrying about preschool, I'm sure! : )
