Scaregrove on October 25

Join Rec & Park for our annual Halloween celebration! Friday, October 25, bring 
your favorite ghouls and goblins to Stern Grove on 19th Avenue and Sloat. $8 entrance
fee, children 2 and under are FREE.

Want to volunteer? Help to support this fun community event. Arts and crafts, face
painting, ride/line control, haunted house and join in with your festive spirit!
 Volunteer 3 hour shifts, start times range from 2pm-6pm, Friday October 25th Stern
Grove on 19th Avenue and Sloat. Volunteers will receive snacks and have access to

Construction Begins on $7 Million Field Renovation of Minnie & Lovie Fields

Members of the Fisher family joined Recreation and Park Department General Manger
Phil Ginsburg  and neighborhood advocates to break ground today on the $7 million
renovation of the athletic fields at Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center.  The
field is the eighth renovation project undertaken by the $52 million Playfields 
Initiative, which was established in 2006 to ensure that all of San Francisco's 
children have a place to play.

"This is a terrific opportunity for the Oceanview community and a great step forward
for Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center," said Mayor Edwin Lee.  "I understand
the value of our parks and athletic fields in building community bonds for families
and youth and for neighborhoods in San Francisco. This renovation will help our 
City continue to thrive."

The Playfields Initiative was created to address the fact that the City is 65 fields
short to meet the growing demand of soccer, lacrosse and baseball teams.  To date,
the replacement of dilapidated grass fields with turf and lights has added 76,000
hours of play on city fields each year and has created enough space for 200 new 
youth soccer teams.

McLaren Playground is Now Open!

The McLaren Park Playground project has provided this neighborhood with new play
 structures and equipment, benches, trash bins, tables, 11 new trees and ground 
cover, updated ADA, new drainage and irrigation system. This project was able to
 come to fruition through the dedication and support of Help McLaren Park, a community
group that spearheaded the effort for a new playground by applying for and receiving
a Community Opportunity Fund Grant under the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks
Bond.

Mobile Rec at Rochambeau Playground on October 19

Come out and play on the Recreation and Parks Department's Mobile Rec gear! No need
to travel far, all through the school year the equipment rotate through parks or
 recreation centers all over San Francisco on Saturdays from 11am to 2pm. You will
be able to learn techniques and test your skills on the Department's 30-foot rock
climbing wall or get skateboarding and biking tips and learn tricks from RecPark
 Staff! Get ready to ride the ramps, rails and manual pads on our BMX bikes and 
skateboards. RPD staff will be on hand to teach beginner's the basics of kick-turns,
fakies, and dropping in.

This Saturday, October 19, Mobile Rec will be at Rochambeau Playground at 238 25th
Avenue.

2nd Annual 20th Avenue Soap Box Derby on October 27

The Friends of Larsen Playground Second Annual Soap Box Derby will be Sunday, October
27 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on 20th Avenue between Wawona and Vicente Streets.

This is an "open" derby, but all cars must have brakes. No charge to enter, but 
donations GREATLY appreciated. Help bring a jet back to Larsen Park!
