1. questions about flying with twins

I have a couple questions about our upcoming xmas trip
to Florida to meet grandpa and see the other relatives.
we are flying American Airlines with 14 month old twins
in our laps. first, do we _have_ to put our checked
carseats in those fancy bags? it seems like a luggage
tag on each handle would be enough to get the carseats
properly identified...second, do the babies need
identification? is a photocopy of their birth
certificates enough, or do airlines want the real deal?
i feel weird about having their actual original
documents on me (particularly since knowing me, they'll
get all wrinkled and stained). i haven't gotten them
passports yet.third, do they charge you for the
additional baby suitcase that we'll likely be checking?
i could probably travel really light and stuff their
clothes in with mine if necessary. i looked at the
American Airlines website for their "children" policy
but it mainly discussed older kids flying solo and
younger kids in their own seats. we really can't
afford to buy an extra $800 seat, so it will be a
toddler in each adult lap, unfortunately.

I take a photo of their birth certificate and keep it
on my phone, but have never been asked to show (I'll be
flying to FL with my to-be 21 month old twins over
Christmas).I got a tip from another mom and it's really
worked well -- buy the car seat bag and at the
airport, put the car seat in, then stuff all the baby
essentials in the seat of the carseat -- I got 2 of
 these duffel bags

 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ON926Y/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
-- one for each car seat bag and filled it with their
clothes, feeding essentials, etc. I was able to fit all
of their stuff in the bags and then put them in the car
seat bag. A duffel is the way to go as it's somewhat
flexible. If you use a garbage bag or one of the
airline carseat bags, they're not secure enough to put
anything else in. It's my understanding that besides
carseats and strollers, any additional luggage, even if
baby-related, is not checked for free. As for carry-on,
i think you can bring a diaper bag, pump bag, etc with
more flexibility. If you happen to go to the Naples area
of FL, let me know as I have more tips for the area
since we went with our then-9 month old twins for a
 mont last Christmas. Good luck!
