Our colobus monkeys Njeri, 23, and Micah, 12, have moved into a renovated space in the Doelger Primate Discovery Center. Their new habitat provides increased opportunities for natural behaviors such as leaping and climbing, while also allowing access for our senior lady Njeri. During down time the colobus' are enjoying the resting platforms, radiant heater, heated shelter, and improved views.

Lion House Closure Begins August 13

Starting Thursday August 13, The Lion House will be closed to the public. Our lions, Jahari, Sukari and Amanzi are part of the African Lion Species Survival Plan (SSP)®, and as with our other SSP® wild cat species, such as Sumatran tigers and fishing cats, they are in an active conservation breeding program. Since active breeding and other signs of pregnancy have been observed by staff, we are taking precautions by closing the Lion House to the public. While the lions will be provided the opportunity to come and go from habitat to the back of house all of our other Sumatran tigers, Amur tigers, Snow leopards and Fishing cats will be visible outside in their exhibits. During the closure, our animal care staff will continue to provide our 2:30 pm keeper talks to our guests outside at one of our Big Cat habitats.

Orangutans in Borneo

Zoo Director Tanya Peterson and Curator of Primates Corinne MacDonald are in Malaysia, Borneo! Along with other zoo professionals from around the world, they are observing both wild and rescued orangutans, proboscis monkeys and other native species. In addition, they are speaking with local conservationists about eco-friendly practices and alternatives sources to palm oil, which has caused significant habitat loss. Speaking of which, the juvenile orangutan male pictured here was orphaned at a young age, but through the efforts of a local rehabilitation center, he has been re-introduced to the wild returning to the center periodically to augment his diet and/or see refuge during severe storms. SF Zoo is proud to partner with this and other rehabilitation centers throughout Borneo!

Cash Only at the Carousel? Not Any More!

As part of an ongoing upgrade to our ticketing systems, we now have the capability to accept debit and credit cards at the Eugene Friend Dentzel Carousel for ride payment. This new system is safe, secure, and makes it easier than even for our patrons and guests to enjoy a ride on our famous attraction.

Fun Fact: François Langurs

Did you know that the François langur got its name from a French consul living in the Guangzi Province in China, who observed them in the cliffs above the Longijuan River? These arboreal and diurnal monkeys are found in densely forested areas and sheltered limestone cliffs in southwestern China, northern Vietnam and western Laos.  Also known as the François leaf monkey due to their mainly folivorous diet, these monkeys have special salivary glands and a large, multi-chambered stomach, including a special chamber with cellulose-digesting bacteria to help them break down all the fibrous leaves.  Groups of François langurs range in size from 4-27 members, with one adult male, multiple females and their offspring.  All females in the group will help care for the young, which are golden in color when born.  These endangered primates are threatened by habitat loss due to agriculture, logging, hunting, and previous destruction of a large portion of their habitat during the Vietnam War.  Our François langurs reside in the Doelger Primate Discovery Center - stop by and see If you can spot the new baby!
