You know that the SF Zoo is strongly committed to saving turtles and all wildlife. Well, on August 29 and 30 come meet Michelangelo and Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Why turtles? The SF Zoo is currently helping to repopulate the Western pond turtle population in Mountain Lake here in the city and we continue to promote a "culture of conservation." Stay tuned for more of public events collaborating with wildlife conservation.

We are on Cub Watch!
We are thrilled to announce that Sukari, our 13 year-old lioness is with cub! As with any birth, there comes anticipation, excitement and nervousness. Sukari, who was born at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and came to us from the Tautphaus Zoo was introduced to our “pride,” consisting of male Jahari and female Amanzi. The three have formed a close bond and we hope their pride will grow soon with the addition of cubs! Given the sensitive nature, we have closed the Lion House’s interior space from the public so Sukari can adjust to her nest box and be as comfortable as possible. Stay tuned!

AB96 Update
AB 96, the proposed legislation to close the loophole in the current law related to importing of elephant ivory, is entering its final stretch and needs your support! The bill is expected to be released by the Senate Appropriations committee this week and move to a full Senate vote next week. It's time to finish strong in our efforts to ensure its full passage! Our friends at 96 Elephants California Campaign are asking all of their partners to reach out to your representatives in the Senate this week and ask that they vote YES on AB 96. We are hoping your endorsement of the bill's passage will be heard by the Senator in your district and influence his or her decision.

Fun Fact: Colobus Monkey
The black and white colobus monkey (also known as a “guereza”) is found in forests in equatorial Africa, from tropical lowlands to montane regions. These arboreal and crepuscular primates live in troops of 8 to 15 individuals, with an adult male, several adult females and their offspring. They feed mainly on leaves and have complex stomachs to help them break down and digest this diet, including gut bacteria, which can help them detoxify plants that might be toxic to other animals. Due to their low-nutrient diet, they spend much time eating, resting or traveling to new food sources in their territory, which can be as large as 32 to 40 acres. Females give birth to one infant at a time, which is all white at birth. Other females in the group will assist with raising the young. The distinctive tail tuft for which the black and white colobus is known helps it change direction as it leaps through the trees, but it is also prized by humans, who have hunted the black and white colobus for this decoration. They are also threatened by habitat destruction. Come visit our black and white colobus monkeys in their new location in the Doelger Primate Discovery Center.
