Cutness Abounds at Cat Kingdom

Our little lion cub is almost four months old! Sukari is being the perfect mom being both a playmate for him and teaching him the ways of the world as a lion. They spend lots of time out in their yard exploring and playing together. Also, he is learning manners from his father Jahari and aunt Amanzi during social introductions. As a curious cub he is testing how playful they will be with him, and Jahari is learning how to be a father for the first time. Zoo Staff is working with them several times a week so that they can get to know each other and become comfortable as a pride. Come see these two soon!

Fun Fact: Nigerian Dwarf Goats

Nigerian dwarf goats are miniature dairy goats of West African origin. Not to be confused with pygmy goats, which are a different breed, Nigerian dwarf goats reach a maximum weight of approximately 75 pounds, with does standing 17 – 19 inches tall and bucks 19 – 20 inches tall. There are many varieties of colors of Nigerian dwarf goats, including black, chocolate and gold with spots or white markings. This color variety and their gentle temperaments make them popular pets. Nigerian dwarf goats can breed year round with an average gestation period of 145 – 153 days, after which 3 – 4 kids are born. Kids weigh around 2 pounds at birth and grow quickly and can reach sexual maturity by 7 weeks of age. These goats can produce significant amounts of milk for their small size at 3 – 4 pounds a day. In addition, they have a high butterfat content in their milk of between 6 – 10% which makes them popular amongst cheese and soap makers. The Fisher Family Children’s Zoo has some newly arrived  Nigerian dwarf goats – stop by the Barnyard and say hello!
