Message from the President
Each year, thousands of innocent elephants are brutally killed in Africa as the worldwide demand for ivory has increased. Scientists estimate that more than 35,000 elephants are murdered each year by poachers in Africa. Laws enacted to stop or reduce the sale of ivory across the globe have been ignored or exploited by poachers. California banned the trade of elephant ivory in the 1970s but an obscure loophole in the law created an exemption for parts imported before 1977. This has made California a fertile marketplace for the ivory trade, and as a result California is now the second largest source of ivory sales in the world because consumer demand is high. It is a moral imperative that this practice ends before these majestic animals go extinct and the most impactful way to stop the trade is to stop the purchase of ivory across our city. It is our duty as citizens of San Francisco to stand united and demand that we become an “Ivory Free” community. San Francisco is in a unique position to take a leadership role and set an example for the rest of the state and the world. To achieve this ambitious but important goal, we must stop demand now. As for this holiday season, please consider foregoing a purchase of ivory and join me in ending this devastating conservation crisis.
Sincerely,
Tanya M. Peterson
President and Executive Director
