Panama Pacific International Exposition Centennial Celebration Kicks Off February
21
Get Ready San Francisco Bay Area! The centennial celebration of the 1915 Panama
Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) officially kicks off the weekend of February
20, at the Palace of Fine Arts with spectacular events, activities, exhibitions,
historic light displays and entertainment for history buffs, innovators and families
that will bring to life the spirit and innovation of the 1915 World's Fair. Outdoor
light shows on Friday and Saturday will salute the dramatic lights of the 1915
Fair.
On Saturday, February 21, starting at noon, the Recreation and Park Department and
its partners, the California Historical Society, Innovation Hangar and Maybeck Foundation

Community Design Forum for SF Playgrounds on February 28

Chinese New Year Kicks Off at Portsmouth Square
Gung Hay Faht Choy and Happy Chinese New Year. The Year of the Ram promises some
exciting things for you at Rec and Park!
This past Saturday, Mayor Lee, SF Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru, and Rec and
Park GM Phil Ginsburg joined the Chinatown community for a Lunar New Year Community
Clean Team event at Portsmouth Square. Volunteers spent their Saturday mornings
cleaning up graffiti, picking up trash, landscaping and beautifying our parks. The
Community Clean Team program is in its 15th year, and we are proud to be a key city
partner in making our streets, parks and plazas cleaner and more beautiful. Each
year, volunteers spend more than 184,000 hours of their time improving our parks
and programs.

Science Saturdays at the EcoCenter at Heron's Head Park on February 21
Science Saturdays are creative, cool, nature conservation programs at the EcoCenter
in Heron's Head Park. They are fun for all the family and FREE. Through March 2015,
the first 15 children (ages 4-12) each week will receive a free ticket to Aquarium
of the Bay! Tickets are first come, first served, so be sure to show up early. The
EcoCenter is located at 32 Jennings Street.

Girls Baseball Tryouts for Summer National Tournament in Orlando on February 21
Rec and Park's BaySox girls baseball program will be hosting spring tryouts for
girls, ages 11-13, on Saturday, February 21 at Crocker Amazon Park (Diamond #3),
from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Baseball instruction and practices will be held two days
per week and every weekend from March to May, culminating in participation in the
first Girls Baseball National Tournament in Orlando, Florida, from May 30-June 6.

Tween Fashion Show on March 5
The 8th Semi-Annual Tween Fashion Show is on Wednesday, March 5, at 5:30 p.m. in
the ballroom at the Harvey Milk Center (50 Scott Street). Participants are students
from the Tween Fashion Star class. The class teaches tweens to "unleash your inner
fashion designer by learning to build with yarn, print, embellish, draft basic patterns,
sketch, style and accessorize." Students learn innovative techniques from three
master textile artists and fashion insiders. The fashion show showcases students'
