Women's World Cup Finals Viewing at Civic Center on July 5

San Francisco Recreation and Parks and America SCORES Bay Area are teaming up again
to bring you a live broadcast of the Women's World Cup soccer finals at Civic Center
on July 5, at 4 p.m. See Team USA face off against the winner of the Japan/England
match. Along with the game on the big screen, fans will be able to get their faces
painted in team colors, scrimmage on mini soccer courts and take part soccer skills
activities.  There will also be gourmet food trucks from Off-the-Grid on hand.

Switch Hitters Take 2015 Dodgeball Crown

Congratulations to the Switch Hitters, who won the 2015 Women-on-Women Dodgeball
 Tournament at Eureka Valley Rec Center last month.  Thirteen teams took part in
 the popular tournament this year, along with special guests The Sisters of Perpetual
Indulgence and Extreme Supreme.

SF Chronicle: Stubborn Gardeners Made Golden Gate Park a Treasure

The San Francisco Chronicle's Our SF project highlights 150 years of the city's 
history.  This week, Peter Hartlaub delves into the story of how park superintendent
John McLaren and city gardeners created Golden Gate Park out of windswept dunes.
  Here's an excerpt: "Golden Gate Park shouldn't exist. It sprang out of sand dunes
in the  1870s; these so-called Outside Lands were so windswept and uninviting  that
the newspapers and many politicians accused supporters of throwing  taxpayer money
away. But visionaries, including park  Superintendent McLaren, had ambitious  hearts,
a stubborn drive and  gardeners who worked like a religious  order. Golden Gate 
Park was built  by men and women who cherished  horticulture and despised politics.
And  because of them, it is a  treasure."

Join the Natural Areas Program gardeners for a habitat restoration project that 
recurs every other month. Tucked away in the southeast corner of the city, Bayview
Park supports a remarkably diverse population of plants and animals.  Please wear
closed-toed shoes and dress in layers.

Save the Date: William Hammond Hall Awards on July 15

In partnership with Local 261, the City and County of San Francisco and Rec and 
Park GM Phil Ginsburg will host the 7th Annual William Hammond Hall Awards on Wednesday,
July 15 at 3:30 p.m., at the Golden Gate Yacht Club.  These annual awards honor 
the top professionals in gardening and horticulture and recognize the men and women
who work day in and day out to make our parks clean and beautiful.  This year's 
event emcees are Supervisor Mark Farrell and Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu.

Street Soccer USA Cup Coming to Civic Center August 15-16

Each summer, Street Soccer USA holds a weekend street soccer festival in the heart
of Civic Center to promote its mission of improving the lives of homeless and at-risk
youth through sports.
