Hi there,We're expecting identical girls this October
(read September). They're our first. I have two areas
of advice I'm looking for today.1. Cloth diapers - did
you use them? How realistic is it with two? What do
you recommend? There are so many choices, I'm not sure
where to start.2. Childcare for three days a week.
What is the usual cost difference between daycare and
in home care (nanny) when there are two? I've also
thought about nanny share, but am not sure that people
want to go into nanny share with twins.Thank you in
advance for your help!Denise and Jeremy

Congrats Denise! For cloth diapers, I can't speak to
them because we didn't use them. I was planning to use
a compostable diaper service (Earth Baby), but then the
kids came unexpectedly early (I know you're supposed to
expect it, but we really didn't) and I sort of lost
track of things, and we just ended up using disposable.
But I know there are people in the group who definitely
used cloth, so it's totally doable. Hopefully one of
them will chime in.For childcare, we looked into a
couple of daycares, and found that the price was about
the same as getting our own nanny, and the fact that
there were a lot of holidays made it actually a little
more expensive (since I'd have to pay for care those
days). My schedule was a little weird in that we needed
a nanny 4 days/week, and two of the days were only 7
hours (and the other two were 10). A daycare doesn't
charge differently for 3/4 of a day, while a nanny
does, since you're just paying for the hours she's
there. So that impacted our costs most would prefer full time work.
We
even had one person accept the position and then quit
(well before she started) when she was offered a job
with more hours. Daycares also vary a lot in price,
depending on whether you go with a bigger, corporate
daycare, or find a smaller, home based place. A nanny
is more convenient, since you don't have to pack up the
kids (and bottles/food/clothes, etc.) and take them
somewhere every day - she just shows up at your door.
And can usually help with at least kid related chores
(i.e., kid laundry, dishes, etc.) But there are also
the costs of having people home all day (heating,
water, food, etc.) and if you end up offering benefits
(sick days, vacation days) that's also additional
expense. I didn't find any situation where someone
wanted to do a nanny share with 3 kids. Another thing
to consider is that a nanny doing a share with 3 kids
might charge something like $30/hour, in which case
you'd pay $20... and you can probably find your own
nanny for not much more than that, and not deal with
the logistics of a share. Anyway, not sure any of this
is helpful; hopefully you'll get some other responses.
Are you a member of the Facebook group? It's worth
posting there; some people are more active there than
on BigTent.Good luck!
