Conservation Club on November 21
Do you have a budding conservationist in your family? Conservation Club is a great opportunity for youth to connect to wildlife and to promote conservation for our wild world. The club meets every other month through May for two and a half hours. During the meetings, club members learn about different conservation topics, meet with animal staff and often participate in conservation actions as well. This club is for kids 9 to 12 years old that love animals and want to learn how they can take care the world’s wild places and wild things.
Registration is available online (https://t.e2ma.net/click/ory4g/o330mu/gdisic): Please note that your child must become a member by November 20 to attend the November 21 meeting.

Fun Fact: Western Pond Turtles
Western pond turtles (also called “Pacific pond turtles”) are found from sea level up to 5,000 feet, in ponds, streams, lakes, rivers and wetlands from northern Baja California through the western states of California, Oregon and Washington to southern British Columbia. They are California’s only native freshwater turtle species. The Latin name “marmorata” refers to the marbling pattern on their shells. They have light to dark brown shells with an olive, brown or yellowish head and limbs. Breeding takes place under water in the late spring to early summer and a nest is dug in soil near the water’s edge. It is estimated that western pond turtles can live up to 40 years. They feed on plants, fish, carrion, frogs, aquatic insects and larvae. Their predators include raccoons, otters, osprey and coyotes. Hatchlings are preyed upon by raptors, ravens, weasels, bullfrogs and large fish. Threats to western pond turtles include pollution, habitat destruction and fragmentation, collection for the pet trade and pressures from introduced species. Come and see the newest batch of hatchlings who are part of the San Francisco Zoo’s head-start Western Pond Turtle Project in the main viewing window in front of the Koret Animal Resource Center.
