Members Morning: Join us November 28 at 9 am for a chance to meet and greet these spectacular creatures during Members Morning!
Kick off the holiday season by giving back to the community. We will have a food drive benefitting the SF-Marin Food Bank at the Zoo beginning the weekend of November 21 and 22.

Trim a Tree for the Zoo
Want a great reason to get into the holiday spirit early? Join the San Francisco Zoo and Gardens in gearing up for our annual ZooLights celebration by decorating a tree for our animals. The decorated trees will be prominently displayed as decoration during the run of ZooLights. After January 4, the trees will be given to our animals as part of our program of providing them with enrichment to help keep them active and healthy. For more information, contact Deb Howe at DebH at sfzoo.org.
Conservation Club on November 21
Do you have a budding conservationist in your family? Conservation Club is a great opportunity for youth to connect to wildlife and to promote conservation for our wild world. The club meets every other month through May for two and a half hours. During the meetings, club members learn about different conservation topics, meet with animal staff and often participate in conservation actions as well. This club is for kids 9 to 12 years old that love animals and want to learn how they can take care the world’s wild places and wild things.
Registration is available online (https://t.e2ma.net/click/c2u7g/o330mu/4fg7ic): Please note that your child must become a member by November 20 to attend the November 21 meeting.

Fun Fact: Reindeer
Did you know that reindeer are a semi-domesticated species of caribou found in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions of North America, Scandinavia, Greenland and Russia? In fact they have been reintroduced in Scotland where they have been extinct since the 10th century. These amazing creatures have also been introduced on South Georgia, an island in the southern hemisphere. Reindeer are highly adapted to their life in cold climates as they have two thick layers of fur to keep them warm. Plus, they have “turbinate” bones in their nose that helps warm the cold air before entering into their lungs. They also have specially designed hooves which provide extra traction on the wet, spongy tundra during the spring; in the winter the footpads shrink and tighten, exposing the rim of the hoof which cuts into the ice and snow for a surer grip. They are used by many circumpolar cultures for their meat, hide, milk and antlers. Laplanders frequently use reindeer for pulling sleighs and measure distance using what is called a “poronkusema” which translates roughly to “passing of water of reindeer.” Reindeer are not able to urinate while pulling sleighs, and are therefore susceptible to clogged urinary tracts if not allowed to take a break. A “poronkusema” is approximately 5 miles, or about 30 minutes of travel time. Come visit the Zoo’s reindeer herd when they go on exhibit this weekend!
