December 1 is Giving Tuesday
December 1 is Giving Tuesday, a chance to support your favorite charities. We hope that you will join in this global day of giving to support the Zoo. This Giving Tuesday, we will lauch our Official "Wish List," a compilation of enrichment items our animals need and love. Animal enrichment encourages behaviors similar to what would be seen in the wild and enhances the animal’s overall well-being. Together with our Animal Care staff, we have assembled a list of enrichment items you can purchase. Check out the Wish List (https://t.e2ma.net/click/kkqah/o330mu/wddljc) here to browse gifts that will keep our animals healthy and engaged during the holiday season and beyond.

Wild Places, Wild Things Conservation Lecture
(https://t.e2ma.net/click/kkqah/o330mu/syeljc)
Mike Veale, Tactical Anti-Poaching Ranger, South Africa & Senior Mammal Keeper, San Diego Zoo Safari Park will be at the Zoo on December 9 at 1 pm to present his experiences as an anti-poaching ranger. Anti-Poaching Rangers stand between the militant poachers and the wildlife they desire. Due to the intensity of the recent outbreak of rhino and elephant poaching, anti-poaching rangers have become more like military teams. Gain insight into the day-to-day life of these dedicated conservationists, understand their challenges and hear how they overcome those uphill battles to catch the criminals wiping out wildlife.
Lecture Location: Osher Great Hall of the Lurie Education Center at San Francisco Zoo and Gardens
Recommended for ages 12 and above.
Free admission to lecture.

Register for Winter Zoo Camp
December 21-24 and December 28-31 (Monday - Thursday) for PreK (must be 4) to 5th grade.
What are your children doing over winter break? They could be going “wild” at the Zoo! A wild week at Winter Zoo Camp will be spent going on guided tours, meeting with animal keepers, playing fun games, making amazing crafts and learning about how animals survive the challenges of winter. Campers will learn about migration, hibernation and adaptation. Older campers will expand on those topics and learn how our animals adapt to the San Francisco winter. Click here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/kkqah/o330mu/0wiljc) to sign up.
Please note that registration for the next session of Little Learners begins on December 3.
Fun Fact: Reindeer
Did you know that reindeer are a semi-domesticated species of caribou found in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions of North America, Scandinavia, Greenland and Russia? Reindeer are highly adapted to their life in cold climates as they have two thick layers of fur to keep them warm. Plus, they have “turbinate” bones in their nose that helps warm the cold air before entering into their lungs. They also have specially designed hooves which provide extra traction on the wet, spongy tundra during the spring; in the winter the footpads shrink and tighten, exposing the rim of the hoof which cuts into the ice and snow for a surer grip. Come visit the reindeer herd on exhibit through January 3!
