AB96 Awaiting Governor Brown's Signature

AB96 is a very important piece of legislation that would ban the import of ivory and rhino horn in California. Currently, AB96 has passed the California Senate and California Assembly. However, it is awaiting final approval by Governor Brown. Please encourage him to sign AB96 into law and help conserve the majestic elephants and rhinos in Africa which are critically endangered.

Fun Fact: Indian Rhinoceros

Did you know that we have a unicorn at the San Francisco Zoo? Rhinoceros unicornis or Indian rhinoceros (also known as the greater one-horned rhinoceros) has a single horn which can grow over 20 inches in length. Indian rhinos feed mainly in the morning and evening, eating grasses, leaves, fruit and aquatic plants and wallow in water to beat the heat of the day. Historically, Indian rhinos were found throughout the northern part of the Indian sub-continent residing in the grasslands along floodplains as well as in adjacent swamps and forests. Today they live mostly in protected reserves in northeast India, Bhutan and Nepal, their numbers seriously reduced due to habitat destruction as well as hunting – previously for pest control and for sport, and today due to poaching. Rhino horn is highly valued in traditional Asian medicines both to alleviate cold symptoms and as an aphrodisiac and will fetch more than twice its weight in gold on the black market. The Zoo’s Indian rhino, Gauhati, can be found at the Pachyderm building, across from the penguins.
