Wild Places, Wild Things! Conservation Lecture
(https://t.e2ma.net/click/smlyg/o330mu/0c76gc)
Please join us on Saturday for a Wild Places, Wild Things! Conservation Lecture titled "My Life with Gorillas," by Rachel Hogan, Director of Ape Action Africa. As "gentle giants," gorillas are playful and inquisitive, thoughtful and clever, and attentive parents. Also they are critically endangered, the last stop before becoming extinct. From hand-raising days-old orphans to running one of the premier primate sanctuaries in Africa, Rachel Hogan's journey on the front lines of gorilla conservation is one of unflagging determination to save these majestic animals.
Presentation: 1:00 pm- 2:30 pm
Osher Great Hall of the Lurie Education Center, San Francisco Zoo
Recommended for ages 12 and above. Free admission to lecture.

Halloween-Themed Wild Walks in October
(https://t.e2ma.net/click/smlyg/o330mu/8ab7gc)
Looking for something creepy, crawly, or a bit bewitching on your trip to the San Francisco Zoo? At 2:00 pm every Saturday and Sunday (and at 10 am, noon, and 2 pm on Halloween), our guided tours have a touch of the terrifying, with our Spooky Specimens theme. We’ll stop by our Komodo dragon, Insect Zoo, and Lipman Family Lemur Forest, discussing why people find these critters captivating and why they aren’t all that scary after all. Tours also include a Keeper Talk and an Animal Encounter. Register via our calendar of events (https://t.e2ma.net/click/smlyg/o330mu/o3b7gc). See you on our march through the Macabre!

Lion Cub Cuteness
As you can see, our little cub is growing larger each and every day. Sukari is definitely being a protective mother and tending to her cub's every need. Aside from nursing and cuddling with mom, the cub continues to get stronger each day. Animal staff continues to monitor the cub via the nest box camera and according to what they can see, it "appears" that the little one is a male. Also, the cub has started to venture out when Sukari leaves the box and is getting much more active. We will let you know as soon as she starts to present the cub to her keepers!
October Birthdays
We have two very special birthdays this month. First, our kudu calf “Madison” just turned 1 on October 11 and our bongo calf “Pence” will turn 1 on October 22. The births of both were very exciting and special, but Pence’s was notable in that she was the first bongo calf ever born at the San Francisco Zoo. The Eastern Mountain Bongo was a new species to the Zoo when her parents arrived two years ago. This species is critically endangered due to habitat loss, with numbers in the wild at only about a hundred animals. Pence and Madison have both grown quite a bit over the past year and are both almost as big as their mothers. Pence can be seen at the bongo exhibit, and Madison can be seen in the African Savanna exhibit.

Fun Fact: Red Panda
Red pandas are found in montane forests in parts of China, Nepal, Myanmar, and India. They feed mainly on young leaves and shoots of bamboo, but will also eat roots, fruits, eggs, or small reptiles when available. They have a thick coat of fur to help keep them warm and a bushy tail that helps them balance while climbing. Their red fur acts as camouflage in the trees where they live in the wild. They have a slow metabolism due to their mainly folivorous diet and are most active at dawn and dusk. Red pandas have a wide range of vocalizations and also communicate through scent-marking. They are mainly solitary, with the female raising her litter of one or two cubs on her own. They have a slow reproductive rate, breeding only once a year, with a gestation period of approximately 135 days. It takes a year for a cub to become fully grown. Red pandas are more closely related to raccoons than bears and are listed in their own taxonomic family, Ailuridae. Their primary non-human predator is the snow leopard, but they are more threatened by human activity such as hunting for pelts and habitat destruction and fragmentation. Join us as we celebrate red pandas on Red Panda Day on Saturday, October 17!
