ANIMAIL ZOO NEWS
Lion Cub Makes Debut
After bonding with mom Sukari for nearly two months in the Zoo's Lion House, the 20-lb. cub is emerging from its specially prepared nest box and exploring the outdoors. And we're proud to announce that it's a boy! Sukari has been especially protective but appears ready to show off her cub. It looks like Sukari will allow him to do some trick-or-treating after all! We anticipate the cub will be on exhibit for his two-month birthday on Halloween, October 31.

Building Confidence in Children through Play
Risk taking is a key factor in childhood development. Offering up those necessary risks to give children the confidence in learning about the world around them is a key component to the Elinor Friend Playground. Read more about how companies like Scientific Arts and civic groups like the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department incorporates these safe educational risks into playground design. Read all about it here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/86r1g/o330mu/kkuxhc). First, we will stop by to see our Komodo dragon, then head on down to the Insect Zoo, as well as the Lipman Family Lemur Forest, discussing why people find these critters captivating and why they aren’t that scary after all. Tours also include a Keeper Talk and an Animal Encounter. Register via our calendar of events (https://t.e2ma.net/click/86r1g/o330mu/cqxxhc). See you on Saturday!

Fun Fact: African Lions
African lions are different from other felid species in several ways: males have a distinctive mane, while in many other cat species there is little sexual dimorphism. Lions are also different from other cats in that they are a social species – they hunt and live in a ‘pride’ with a dominant male, related females and cubs. Males will also form bachelor groups. Females become sexually mature at 4 years and after a 110 day gestation period, 1 – 6 cubs are born. The cubs are dependent on adults until 16 months of age. While lions are carnivores and hunt mainly medium- to large-sized ungulates such as antelope and wildebeest, they have also been known to scavenge. Females do the majority of the hunting and tend to hunt under cover of darkness, as they have very good night vision. Panthera leo’s historic range was once across Asia and Africa. Today a small population of Asiatic lions remain in India; African lions now inhabit sub-Saharan Africa and can be found on savannas of East Africa, south to the Kalahari Desert. Lions are vulnerable due to poaching and trophy hunting, as well as conflict with farmers and ranchers. In addition, habitat destruction and fragmentation decreases the amount of available prey and food sources. Come on out to the Zoo this weekend to see our new lion cub explore his outdoor enclosure.
