Halloween-Themed Wild Walks in October

Looking for something creepy, crawly, or a bit bewitching on your trip to the San Francisco Zoo? At 2 pm every Saturday and Sunday (and at 10 am, noon, and 2 pm on Halloween), our guided tours will have a touch of the terrifying, with a Spooky Specimens theme. First, we will stop by to see our Komodo dragon, then head on down to the Insect Zoo, as well as the Lipman Family Lemur Forest, discussing why people find these critters captivating and why they aren’t that scary after all. Tours also include a Keeper Talk and an Animal Encounter. Register via our calendar of events (https://t.e2ma.net/click/kk2zg/o330mu/syyghc). See you on our march through the Macabre!

Farewell to Martha

Farewell to Martha, our 15-year-old Siberian tiger, who passed away of natural causes on October 15. We were lucky to have her at the Zoo for more than four years and it is very sad to say goodbye. She was an important ambassador who taught us about the world of Siberian tigers and inspired staff and visitors to advance conservation for her species.

Fun Fact: Bats

Bats have a spooky reputation, but in fact they are critically important animals worldwide. In ancient times, people believed bats were the souls of sleeping people or that they were the night spirits feeding on the blood of sleeping victims. In truth, there are only three types of vampire bats found, all living in the tropics where they prey mainly on sleeping cattle, not humans. With more than 1,300 species of bats worldwide, they account for about 20% of all mammal species. Some types of bats feed on fruit and nectar, (pictured here is the Hammer-headed Fruit Bat) thus they are important to their ecosystems as they play crucial roles in pollination and seed dispersal. Most bats are insectivores and use echolocation to find prey and navigate in the dark. Echolocation is like the sonar that dolphins and whales use – emitting high frequency sounds and interpreting the echoes that bounce back from the objects in front of them. These insectivorous bats help balance their ecosystems by keeping populations of insects in check, thereby reducing the need for use of pesticides. For example, the 200 million Mexican free-tailed bats that live in Bracken Cave, Texas eat up to 200 tons of insects per night! For information on bat conservation, come to Boo at the Zoo on Saturday, October 24, to meet the Bat Lady from NorCalBats (https://t.e2ma.net/click/kk2zg/o330mu/4b1ghc).
