It's a Cub!
Sukari, our 13 year old lioness, gave birth to a cub on August 30 at 2:30 am. Zoo staff will not know the cub's gender for approximately three weeks because we give the new mother and cub a wide berth, respecting their privacy to encourage their bond. However, we are observing the cub and are monitoring its care via a remote camera installed in Sukari's den. The cub's father, twelve-year-old Jahari, is the only adult male in the San Francisco Zoo's lion pride (group of lions). The new cub will make four lions in our African Lion pride. Eighteen-year-old lioness Amanzi will assume the role of "aunt" to the infant, bonding and grooming the new cub when Sukari is ready to share her parenting duties.
Whenever you eat at one of the Zoo's cafes, shop in the Wildlife Connection Gift Shop or host your child's birthday here at the Zoo, you are working with Service Systems Associates (SSA), the Zoo's vendor of choice for many years. We are proud to announce that SSA recently became a member of RSPO, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. RSPO is a global, multi-stakeholder initiative to promote the production and use of sustainable palm oil for people and our planet. According to Rainforest Rescue, the demand for palm oil has become very pervasive and is destroying the rainforests. Approximately 50% of the goods used everyday, from processed foods to candles, contain palm oil. Learn more here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/wt9og/o330mu/kc47dc).

AB96 Passes the CA Senate
On September 2, AB96 officially passed the California Senate by a margin of 26-13! This exciting news is a tremendous step in saving wildlife. The bill will now back to the Assembly for a concurrence vote and then will be presented to Governor Brown for a final signature of approval. As always, thank you for supporting this important piece of legislation and for your mindfulness in conserving wild places and wild things.
