Lion Cub Update
Sukari, our 13 year old lioness, and her newly born cub continue to do well. The cub is getting stronger each day and starting to take real steps and actually walk- not just scoot around! His/ her eyes (sex still unknown) are opening up and he/she is vocal when wanting something from mom. Staff continue to monitor them remotely via cameras in the nest box as well as one placed outside an adjacent room. Sukari is a very protective mother and is still building her trust up even with her familiar keepers when they are near her rooms. It will still be awhile before we even see the little one in person as we continue to work with Sukari’s comfort level during these delicate early days.

Collaboration with Stanford University
Dr. Watters and a professor from Stanford, Dr. Joseph Garner joint taught a class on animal enrichment called “Life in the Zoo: Behavior, Welfare and Enrichment” as part of Stanford’s Sophomore College program. Twelve fantastic undergraduates from Stanford spent two weeks learning about the Zoo’s Komodo dragon, grizzly bears, and kangaroos. Students designed, built, and deployed novel enrichments for their animals. The teams came up with awesome ideas, including a new mister for the komodo dragon, kangaroo feeders run by ice timers that melt and let food out throughout the day, and a bear kibble launcher for the grizzlies. At the end of the two weeks, the class culminated in a research symposium where students presented the outcomes of their research. The Wellness team is looking forward to expanding on the students’ ideas over the coming year!

Veterans Visit the Zoo
This past Wednesday we had about 400 veterans from different programs through the VA Hospitals visit the Zoo. The VFW Post 4103 from SSF hosted lunch for the group which comprised of veterans from Yountville, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, San Francisco, Livermore and Santa Clara. Our gracious docents and volunteers assisted guests with tours and bone carts, while ARC animals were present for close encounters in the Wildlife Theatre. Our guests thoroughly enjoyed their visit and were very grateful for the opportunity to visit the Zoo.

Fun Fact: African Lions
African lions are different from other felid species in several ways: males have a distinctive mane, while in many other cat species there is little sexual dimorphism. Lions are also different from other cats in that they are a social species – they hunt and live in a ‘pride’ with a dominant male, related females and cubs. Males will also form bachelor groups. Females become sexually mature at 4 years and after a 110 day gestation period, 1-6 cubs are born. The cubs are dependent on adults until 16 months of age. While lions are carnivores and hunt mainly medium- to large-sized ungulates such as antelope and wildebeest, they have also been known to scavenge. Females do the majority of the hunting and tend to hunt under cover of darkness, as they have very good night vision. Panthera leo’s historic range was once across Asia and Africa, today a small population of Asiatic lions in India remain; African lions now inhibit sub-Saharan Africa and can be found on savannas of East Africa, south to the Kalahari Desert. Lions are vulnerable due to poaching and trophy hunting, as well as conflict with farmers and ranchers. In addition, habitat destruction and fragmentation decreases the amount of available prey and food sources.

Heads Up: Water's Extreme Journey Closes October 4th!
Water's Extreme Journey maze transforms the visitor into a drop of water entering a watershed, an area of land where water drains and collects into a shared reservoir. As visitors will discover, a watershed can be right in their own neighborhood, or as big as the Rocky Mountain region!
To explore the exhibition watershed, visitors voyage through rivers, lakes, wetlands, and even their homes, eventually reaching the healthy ocean. Sound easy? Water drops face many hurdles as they interact with humans. Does the farm they encounter use pesticides? Did someone get messy changing their oil, or flush prescription drugs down the toilet? Clean choices keep our drops healthy and moving toward a clean ocean. Dirty choices send our drops down the urban storm drain to the unhealthy ocean, where they evaporate, condensate, and precipitate for another try.
