Greenagers Pack the Parks
Congratulations to our Greenagers, who successfully completed a four-day, 30-mile
hiking trip in celebration of the National Parks Service Centennial this past weekend.
The trip began on July 21 at the Farallones Elementary School in Montara and ended
on July 24 at Crissy Field. Our Greenagers Program is a service learning and leadership
program for teens in the southeastern neighborhoods of San Francisco.

New Lafayette Dog Play Area Opens
Rec and Park, Supervisor Mark Farrell and District 2 neighbors officially opened
a new dog play area at Lafayette Park on July 26. The $305,000 project, which included
an $85,000 add-back from Supervisor Farrell, provides synthetic "doggie turf" for
the off-leash dog play area, allowing for increased hours of off-leash dog use and
a more durable surface for the popular canine play area. The Friends of Lafayette
Park (FOLP), a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the enjoyment, safety,
and improvement of Lafayette Park, also supported the installation of new doggie
turf.

The Cultural Landscape Foundation Recognized by Rec and Park Commission
Recreation and Park Commission President and Department GM Phil Ginsburg welcomed
René Bihan, board member of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, at a commission meeting
on July 21.
The Cultural Landscape Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Washington,
D.C., that works to educate and engage the public to make our shared landscape heritage
more visible, identify its value, and empower its stewards.
This year, The Cultural Landscape Foundation celebrates the centennial of famed
landscape architect Lawrence Halprin's birthdate. Halprin, who at one time served
as an apprentice under San Francisco landscape architect Thomas Church, is noted
for his work on the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C.; Heritage Park in Fort Worth;
and Sea Ranch in Sonoma County.
Locally, Halprin's projects included Sproul Plaza at UC Berkeley; the adaptive reuse
of Ghirardelli Square in the early 1960s; United Nations Plaza; Levi Plaza; and
our own beloved Stern Grove Amphitheater in 2005.
This fall, TCLF will launch a traveling photographic exhibition that debuts at the
National Building Museum in November and travels nationally for the next three to
five years. There will be some 56 photographs covering approximately two dozen projects,
from early and recently rediscovered private residential gardens in the Bay Area
from the 1950s to capstone projects such as Yosemite and Sigmund Stern Grove.
