Saying Goodbye to an Amazing Friend

Both the City and Zoo of St. Francis lost an amazing friend and advocate with the passing of Mayor Ed Lee.  Even before his term as Mayor, Lee championed conservation education programs at SF Zoo & Gardens, helping to fund and build the Society’s Connie and Bob Lurie Education Center.  Indeed, with great pride, Lee used to boast that he personally screwed in the squirrel-handled doors of The Bernard Osher Great Hall.  Thus, we love this picture of Mayor Lee standing in “his” door way with an ambassador of the Society’s most successful conservation breeding programs, the American Bald Eagle.  On this very special day, we recounted to Mayor Lee how we had used technology to create “safe zones” between eagle parents and their offspring.  With a smile and twinkle in his eye, he joked that he should have thought of safe zones when he was living with two teenage daughters at home!  His attention to detail, hands-on approach and good humor will be greatly missed!

Yes, they are real!
