Volunteer Appreciation Party on November 4

SF Deltas Host the Championship Semifinals Against North Carolina FC on November

Scaregrove Brings Fright and Fun to Stern Grove
This past Friday, we held our annual Halloween event "Scaregrove," at Stern Grove.
On a beautiful autumn evening, more than 6,000 kids and family members flocked from
all over the city to show off their costumes, run through haunted houses, and hop
on carnival rides. Thank you to everyone that made it such a fun event and special
thanks to the recreation staff of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department

Farewell to Longtime Park Advocate May Wong
On Friday, October 20, the City lost one of its most dedicated park advocates. Fellow
park advocate and McLaren Park neighbor Linda Stark Litehiser shared with us her
 thoughts on May's dedication over the years.

"May Wong was the consummate park volunteer. She was everywhere in the park system.
>From participating in park work days in her lifelong neighborhood of the Excelsior
District to going across town to the annual holiday tree lighting at McLaren Lodge,
she was always somewhere helping out.

"She was sure to attend almost every Recreation and Park commission meeting to make
sure that the Commissioners did not forget the southeast side of town. She referred
to general manager Phil Ginsburg as "Uncle Phil" and he knew this was a term of 
great affection as well as her expectation that he would listen to her concerns.
 Everyone listened to May. She would show up at City Hall to lobby for her neighborhood
causes and though she could be very serious and stern, she followed it up with cookies
or Chinese pastries and an offer of true friendship.

"She was one of the founders of the Saturday in the Park - McLaren, free concert
 series at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park.  She came up with the 
name for the series too. She was active in park philanthropy as well as day-in, 
day-out sweat equity. The volunteers of Crocker Amazon Playground, McLaren Park,
 Excelsior Playground and her beloved Greenagers, will miss her immensely."
There will be a final memorial service for May on November 12 at Skylawn Memorial
Park (Highway 92 and Skyline Blvd.) in San Mateo (11 a.m. gathering, 1 p.m. ceremony),
followed by a reception at Henry's Hunan Restaurant in the Excelsior at 3:45 p.m.

Civic Center Community Workshop on November 7
The City & County of San Francisco is kicking-off a new plan for long-term improvements
to Civic Center's plazas, streets and other public spaces. We invite you to be a

the air quality caused by the regional wildfires in October. The event is Northern
California's largest sandcastle competition that supports an important cause of 
bringing essential arts programs into local schools. This unique sandcastle competition,
nonprofit fundraiser and community event brings over 3,000 people to San Francisco's
Ocean Beach every year to build super-sized sand sculptures with local students.

Youth Stewardship Program (YSP) Workshops in November

Art Workshops for Infants & Toddlers at Randall Museum in October
Drop into the Randall Museum at Mission Art Center (745 Treat Avenue) for an innovative
art class for infants and toddlers ages 1 year and two months to 5 years old. Kids
and caregivers will combine art making with children's songs and nursery rhymes.
 Together they can use toys and everyday art tools to make this art class extra 
fun. Paint with sponges, miniature cars, rollers, fingers and more. As with every
art class, dress for a mess!
Infants and toddlers must be accompanied by a participating adult with a cost of
 $10 per parent-child combo. Drop-in between 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays and
1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays in October.
