While our children likely think the biggest event this week is June 6, the last day of school, there is another important event the day before—election day. If you can, please vote on June 5!

Our students have learned a lot this year, and it wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and dedication of their teachers and family members, as well as many community volunteers and organizations. On their behalf, I express my deepest gratitude.

—Dr. Vincent Matthews, Superintendent

		 [9] Outstanding graduates of 2018

When we created [10] Vision 2025: Reimagining Public Education for a New Generation, we worked with the community to construct a [11] graduate profile—the knowledge and skills our students need to succeed in the future. Meet a few members of the Class of 2018 who exemplify traits in our graduate profile.

[41] Why teaching English through content is critical for ELL students

Teaching grade-level content to students who have just arrived in the United States and whose English skills are limited is a difficult task. High school-level content specialists especially have little training on how to integrate language acquisition into their content. Often teachers deal with that by either dumbing down the curriculum to make it linguistically simpler or alternating between lessons focused on language and those about content.

[53] ‘Last stop’ school cuts absences in half with social, emotional focus

On a Tuesday morning, Alba Perez was the only student sitting inside of a classroom at Civic Center Secondary School, but she wasn’t alone. Two teachers and a social worker engaged the 14 year old as she constructed a marble run out of paper. “In other schools, you don’t sit in a classroom and do stuff. You sit in a classroom writing and listen all day to people telling you what to do,” Perez said. “Here, they give me options. And if I don’t want to do anything, I don’t have to. It works for me, because why would you do something you don’t want to do?”

[55] SF Symphony program makes sure there’s music in kids’ lives

At Spring Valley Science Elementary School, on San Francisco’s Nob Hill, a small crowd of third-graders is chanting in unison, gleefully shouting, “No! No! No!” In front of them, the band Brass Roots is leading them in call-and-response, as part of a demonstration of New Orleans-style music. It’s one locale within the performance’s wide-ranging presentation of brass music, as the four-piece band presents music from British marching bands to Brazilian and African traditions to the stylings of Duke Ellington.

[57] SF voters to weigh supplementing educator salaries with parcel tax

As teachers walk out of classrooms across the country to demand increased wages and resources, San Francisco voters are being asked to help address an educator recruitment and retention crisis on the home front by backing a tax that would boost salaries by 7 percent for two decades. Proposition G, on the June 5 primary ballot, is expected to generate $50 million annually by levying a $298 parcel tax—a type of property tax that is not directly based on property values—on real estate owners, with a few exceptions.
